Timing belt questions...

Post by AlanS »

107,000 on my 2006 XC70. Belt and tensioner done at 74K. Is it time to do it again? If so...water pump, serpentine belt and camshaft seals? FCP offers a package. I don't have the skill set for the belt...kinda scared of screwing it up, so local shop will be doing the job (with my parts). Continental belts and INA/tensioner and pump OK?

Unless Volvo adjusted the change frequency, you didn't need to do the original belt until 105k miles. I had Volvo do my 1st one at 112k miles. Unless your camshaft seals or water pump leaked all over your timing belt, I wouldn't do another until I surpassed 150k miles. Change the water pump and camshaft seals at that time.

Who suggested you needed it done @ 74k miles? Seems premature.

The recommended change interval that I’ve seen is 105.000 miles or 10 years. That car only goes ~7000 miles/year so it may have hit 74k at 10 years. How long ago, in years, was the last belt change. Like 93SC suggests, if nothing’s leaking or making bad noises then a belt replacement now might be premature.

Just go into your owner's manual and read the repair intervals for said parts. You'll be close to 200K before you need to worry about the timing belt again if it was new at 75K. The timing belt and accessory belt have a change interval of 105000 miles or 168000Kms. If your's is a VIN code of #64 the manufacturer suggests 150000 miles. This is out of my '03 manual.
Water pump and tensioner doesn't have a recommendation but it would seem prudent to change both at the second timing belt change as many MVS members suggest. I just changed these parts at 278,000Kms and my original Volvo water pump and belt tensioner and pulley were still good and tight, I changed them anyway.
I only buy parts in a blue Volvo box and they're really expensive but thats just my choice.......I think it's cheaper in the end.

I agree. My belt and tensioners were replaced at 112K miles after 11 years with Volvo blue box parts. Originals still look in great shape (still have the parts). No cracks or deterioration of the belt. Tensioners spin like they should.
No one wants a timing belt to snap, but you can look at it and determine if it's got wear. Take a peak before dropping $ to replace it.

If your seals are in good shape, the belt will last a lot longer than Volvo suggests changing it.

Volvo timing belt, Volvo tensioner, Volvo idler, Aisin water pump. Volvo seals if yours are leaking.

Belts and tensioner are definitely mileage wear items vs time. Exception if you live in a heavily urban area with a lot of ozone.

My T5 went 140k and 14 years on my original timing gear

Use Volvo stuff only, AISIN or HEPU is ok for water pump
