Try the bypass to confirm the cranking is ok!

I'll have to go through the whole car tomorrow. A delay in parts coming for my E39 (wonderful job by the way, FedEx. Sitting in a facility 30 minutes away for the past 2 days, when it was due to be delivered yesterday and I STILL don't have it) has made me look for other projects in the meantime. That started with buying another car, because I don't have enough already

How do you clean the knobs on the ECC unit? Every time I accidentally touched mine with fingernails, it made a permanent mark for the many long years that I owned the car.
Same is true for the window raise/lower buttons. My front driver's 4x button array is about 10 years old and the buttons are sticky. What's a good way to remove that gunk without hurting the window icons?
Did you buy it off a junkyard lot? Isn't there a chance they had it on a forklift, damaging underside components? I'm tempted to drag home V70s which appear to have no damage, but lord knows what's happened to them while at the yard.bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑11 Oct 2021, 19:47 Yeah, I did that "rescue" thing again today... oops! Dragged home an '08 S40! No crank condition, I'm thinking it may be the ignition switch after some quick poking around on VIDA.

I didn't read it but there was a thread recently on that subject. These buttons all go sticky with age. Could be worse, could be on your Ferrari which are known for this as well. In good company. Heat makes them worse.
I'll see if I can find that thread.
Here it is. I still think I saw another one on the same subject but can't find it.

Went back to PnP yet again! This car is continuing to self destruct in ways I have never seen on any other P80's over the last 20+ years. When I was re-installing the dash top, I decided to remove the cabin fan to retrieve the change label from the new cabin filter as I was already in the dash anyway. On removing the lower footwell covering on the passenger side, I found bits of plastic lying on top of it. Initially couldn't figure out where it had come from. Further investigation found the source. The top RH corner of the glove box surround support had broken off the lower dash. How on earth that has happened I am totally bemused by it.
Decided last night to take yet another run to PnP and hoped after the weekend the one and only P80 there (a 99 S70). Getting up today it was only -8C!! Forecast was to get to +9C, maybe!
Took a run down after lunch as the sun was out. Fortunately the car was still there. As I had removed the upper pad already and the steering wheel surround, Radio and ECC , and someone else had removed the glove box insert, expected a quick removal.
Got to the car to fins some absolute ass had removed the ignition key and the steering wheel at a perfect angle to line the 2 holes up for the 2 x T30 Torx screws on the back of the steering wheel so you could not easily access them.
Total time to remove all the other stuff including the wiper motor was less than 30 minutes. Tome to remove the 2 screws? Over an hour!! I could only actually access the screws once the dash was actually loose which allowed me to get a Torx driver into the 2 screws and turn it less than a quarter turn each time.
Got the lower dash out, and took the top section too as it was in good shape. The young guy behind the desk at PnP recognised me after all my recent visits. We share a bond of tragedy. He with his BMW and me and my 'R'. He took pity on me and only charged me for the lower section. Still another $80!! I will look at it closer tomorrow as I am not sure it has all the plastic there either but it was hard to inspect at PnP with nowhere to put it down safely. I may be lucky as I don't think any of the 4 dash mounts is broken yet! If not this is the only the 2nd I have ever seen! I will still reinforce the mounts as prevention anyway!
Now off to cry in a beer!

Ah, fun P80 dash adventures! Always a good time!
Copart cars are known to have damaged suspension components from the forklift. My dad had a BMW X3 that had previously been at a Copart location, and the rear control arms were bent pretty badly from it. Neither of us even noticed until he was replacing the differential, and we realized the bent control arms were causing the barely noticeable slight positive camber as well as a subtle squeak. I put 2 and 2 together and realized that's exactly how it happened, since it made no sense for them to be bent like that from anything but a junkyard forklift.
I usually clean the climate control knobs with isopropyl alcohol. It works really well, just be careful around the white printing on the buttons and knobs. It will rub off if you're not careful.
As for the S40, I'm pretty sure I have that figured out. It seems the steering lock mechanism failed, causing the no-start. I pulled the dash apart earlier, but I barely have any room to work on it where I parked it, so I'll move it tomorrow and finish the job. I'm hoping to figure out a solution where I don't have to rig it, because I can't stand that sort of stuff.
This color is really growing on me though. It looks pretty cool in person, and I'm sure once it's washed it'll look great! Chameleon blue metallic.
I did not, bought it privately off a guy who has owned it for the past 10 years and 150k miles. Had to let go of it as he was moving across the country, and didn't want to sort it out and take it with him at this point.FireFox31 wrote: ↑12 Oct 2021, 13:27How do you clean the knobs on the ECC unit? Got my rear driver caliber replaced, it was locked in and pushing down the outer brake pad. got a new used caliper from my indy mechanic and put some used pads on it. The hope is that the pad will resurface the rough part of the rotor as the damage was minor. Gonna go back in a week to get new pads all round. Its nice to be back in the boat.

My PnP/junkyard stash from the last 2 visits now cleaned:
Should also add I found a battery lock on the ground under the car!
Don't really need all the smaller stuff but it will get moved on to those who need them when time allows!
