2004 XC70 Timing marks @ 10 & 2???

Post by Swederweather »

Hey y'all, long time Volvo owner but my first time I couldn't find what
I needed already on the site.

So awhile back, my 2004 xc70 was making a short trip through town when it overheated and dumped its oil and coolant. When I tried to add more coolant, it ran straight through out the bottom of the car. I was TERRIFIED, that seemed like a huge issue. However, when I added oil and let it cool down the car drove fine and didn't lose any more oil. Continued short trips and oil pressure is maintained, only leak is the same one I have had for 50k miles the car drives great but has no coolant.

It looks like the water leak is at the water pump, and @250k miles I'm not surprised, the timing belt hasn't been changed in the last 100k miles since I have owned it. So I got a pump/timing kit and am looking to replace it, here's where I'm worried.

My timing marks are on the back of the sprocket, so you cant see them with the cover on to line them up. Ok fine, Ill just make some marks on the block and on the belt where they line up so they go in the right place with the right amount of teeth between them. However, the marks on my sprockets are at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions, not 12 o'clock as the fcp and other videos show.
After reading about these cvvt hubs and how you may need to make two marks on the block, the fact that both sprockets are cvvt and with my timing marks being very far from those in any resource I can find I'm hesitant.

There are also 2 timing marks on the crank, on directly adjacent teeth which also does not match any resources I can find. Is this normal or did someone masterfully wing the timing on this car? It runs fantastic as is.

I will include pictures as soon as I can.

Unless you remove the cam hubs theres no need to use 2 marks.
I lock the cam sprockets in place , release tension and slip the old belt off. change whatever parts you need , slip the new belt on.
If nothing moves theres no drama.
Time mark for crank is between the 2 teeth with those tiny marks.

Update: Replaced water pump, tensioner, idler pulley and thermostat housing. Coolant system works great now, idled it up to temp and took it for a short drive, no issues. I did not move timing at all as none of the marks were where they are "supposed" to be, but the car runs fine.

Now I'm in a whole new world of problems that may require its own thread.

This all started with a bad overheat due to what I now know was a faulty temp sensor that was not relaying the right data.
