XC90 2.5 going into limp mode P2411 - Throttle Body??

Post by mcu »

Have to say I love my volvo and this site. I have a 2006 XC90 with 2.5T and 280k kms. During the summer I had water coming from the sunroof so i fixed the issue on a drain that had disconnected on the drivers side.

Shortly after, I noticed a check engine light...P2401 and P2419. I read it could be a relay or fuse, but i could not find the solution.

Now for the past week or two, sometimes only in morning, when I start the car, it goes into LIMP mode (Reduced Engine Performance). If I hook up my Innova ODB reader, I get P2411, which from what I read is related to Throttle Body. If I clear my codes with the reader, the car runs well again. Not sure how long that trick will work, but wondering if it's a dirty throttle body or TPS sensor. Should I take it apart and clean it or should I order an aftermarket new unit on amazon for $75?

Would love to hear your opinions and why is it that all is ok after i clear it? Does that mean it's electrical?

Thanks

P2401 & P2419 are Leak diagnostic unit, valve : Short-circuit to ground in the signal cable.

Check the wiring and electrical connectors. The short could be internal to unit.
It is up above the rear axle. You need to drop the spare tire to get to it.

Great, will check this. Any idea on the part number for that unit?

Also any suggestions on the throttle body?

Thanks RickHaleParker. I got the throttle body unit replaced because after removing and cleaning the original one, things actually got worse. I just hope the new one lasts as it's an aftermarket.

Question...can the Leak diagnostic unit be causing excessive fuel consumption? I have noticed that i am burning as much as my Hummer does lately doing 17-19L/100km, where i have been doing 10-13L/100kms for years now. what are some things that could cause such an increase? I thought possibly a bad wheel sensor as I replaced a ball joint recently or something with the computer, but I am at about 1/2 tank of full tank with only about 200kms done....so must be right.

The leak diagnostic unit is what it's name said it is. A diagnostic unit. I got nothing to do with the operation of the engine.

I suspect Fuel injectors and O2 sensors getting contaminated is the source of the increased consumption. Contamination will not necessarily produce any DTCs. How many Kilometers on the clock? Have the Fuel injectors and/or the O2 sensors ever been replaced?

280,000kms and to be honest not sure if they have been replaced. Should I try a fuel injection cleaner/fuel stabilizer first?
Same thing for o2 sensors.

so a problem with the leak unit will make no difference to car operation or the life of anything else other than the annoying check engine light and required for states with emission laws?

You might try some cleaner first. 280,000kms is not real high. I bought my 2005 XC90 T6 with 238,00 Miles ( 383,000 kilometers ) for $500.00 because it barely moved. No power whatsoever. A set of remanufactured injectors and it runs like new. 15 MPG ( 15.681 L/100km ) city, 20 MPG ( 11.761 L/100km ) highway. Exactly what the T6 is rated for.

No problem other then what you listed... unless there is a leak. Then you would be playing a bigger part in trashing the planet and killing off us humans.

thank you! I will give that a try first. Can I get rid of the check engine light caused by the Leak Unit if I had a VIDA or only way around it is to replace the unit?

Vida does not let you create phony ready codes to pass inspection.

You can throw US$80.00 at it for a new Leak detection unit and hope it not a short in the wiring or you can check for shorts in the wiring and possibly keep that $80.00 in your pocket.
