As Scot pointed out, the air under the hood is a higher temperature. You lose by drawing in the higher temperature air.
Automotive engineers are not stupid. If what you are thinking was correct. The engineers would of incorporated it in the design and spared Volvo the cost of that cold air intake collector that picks up air from outside the engine compartment.
Don't get cold air intake confused with the " cold air intake " scammers like K&N want to sell you. Those are gimmicks that don't work. They pick up hot air from within the engine compartment and other things that are detrimental.
