All air coming into the Air box is fresh and cool. You gain nothing by drilling holes in the Air box .
As Scot pointed out, the air under the hood is a higher temperature. You lose by drawing in the higher temperature air.

Automotive engineers are not stupid. If what you are thinking was correct. The engineers would of incorporated it in the design and spared Volvo the cost of that cold air intake collector that picks up air from outside the engine compartment.

Don't get cold air intake confused with the " cold air intake " scammers like K&N want to sell you. Those are gimmicks that don't work. They pick up hot air from within the engine compartment and other things that are detrimental.

YES! Having the snorkel will improve performance compared to not having the snorkel.
I have read a magazine article for 1960's American muscle cars saying the car engineers found adding outside air inlets added about 5 HP for a large V8.

So if it incteases hp by 5 on a 300 hp V8, you might gain optimistic 3hp on a 170 hp i5.

And by gain I mean regain, just like a good tuneup with quality plugs, wires, air filter and distributor might regain 10hp that were lost along the way.
