1998 V70 Cool Weather start issue

My 1998 v70 will briefly start, but not remain running, when the ambient temperature falls below 60ºF. The engine cranks, briefly catches, but within 2 seconds idles down and stops. Subsequent attempts to start have the engine crank but not catch. The colder it is, the longer this persists. Eventually (2-15 min later) the engine will catch and then runs fine, restarts fine until car is left for enough time (hour+) to cool entirely.

There is another thread on a similar topic currently. I would suggest checking the coolant temp sensor (ECT) and its wires from the ECT and to the connector on the back of the power steering pump case.

The ECT is a thermal resistor. Thermal resistors do degrade with age. A good engineer will take the degradation into account when designing the circuit but there a limits to what he can do. 20+ years of service indicates the engineer did a good job.
