What you guys/gals think...Replace entire pump?

Post by Volvonutt »

04 v70 2.5tAWD....So last month or so we started slowly smelling a slight fuel odor once in a while and when I did the suspension I smelled fuel on the RR. I figured the FF might need changing or something(car is new to me 4 months, in crazy nice condition) but didnt think twice about it because would come back to it when did the filter soon.

Well two days ago BAM lots of fuel when I drove about 30 minutes on freeway, car sat 2hrs and could still smell fuel when I came back out to it. drove home vehicle did not smell inside but outside at any point since it was driven you could EASILY smell the fuel, 3 hrs later..the next day...like it was a seal or something.

Today found this:

I would just assume to buy a pump assembly and replace but wanted to get some feedback before I dropped that much money and wasted that much time to learn next week that it is a hose coupler or something ridiculous. :o

I appreciate any input

You might want to check that the "Volvo Fuel Pump Recall" was performed on your car prior to doing this yourself. NHTSA ID 09V483. Volvo instructions RTJ 22721. It's worth researching before dropping the $ yourself. Find your VIN and plug in in.

I thought we did have someone who successfully epoxied that white plastic fitting that cracks here, but that’s definite a pump replacement.

I had the same fuel pump housing crack and replaced with new pump. I felt at near 190K miles, the pump itself was due for replacement. I felt more confidence in a new pump than a repair of the crack.
The process is much documented here on MVS if you search for it.

I used JB weld, suitable for gas and chemical/solvent repair, its a thickened epoxy.
dis-connect battery...duh..
Clean pump top with brake clean , then disconnect fittings and clean again.
Don't sand or scuff the area, tiny scratches provide migration paths for future seepage..
you can do the repair with pump in place
allow 24 hrs to fully cure.
Did mine 4 years ago, its still good.
