Relieve pressure at the fuel rail with the scrader valve and also open your gas cap to relieve any vacuum pressure in the line...then it should be self explanatory. Sometimes the line is hard to pry off...be careful that you don't damage it. Also, replace the filter so it's pointing in the right direction. Guess that's about it.

I assume your in the Uk as you have a D5...
i just changed mines afew days ago..make sure you have less then half tank of fuel first..then rasie car from drivers side..the filter is just behind rear wheel and should just twist off anti clockwise by hand..keep a bucket or bowl underneath handy as there will be a small leakage of diesel..get new filter and smear oil on the rubber sealing rings and tighten up clockwise direction..car will take a little longer to start at first but will settle down soon..

Thanks again for your help

I 've put off changing it to this weekend coming now.

I intend to fill the filter first with diesel proir to screwwing in position and wondered if you had done this?

No i didnt fill filter first..explains why car struggled to fire up straight away..i would suggest not using the same fuel in old filter for filling new one..the stuff which came out of old one looked very different to fresh derv

Oh yes only new diesel.
I've seen people fill the new filter with the old non filtered diesel still in the old filter!!!!!!!!!!!
Not the best practise me thinks.

I will let you know how easy it starts after.
Thanks again
