Stiff steering wheel

Post by Tarek80 »

Hello,
I have a 2001 C70 2.4L.
I replaced the Rack after it was leaking fluid. I replaced all the parts with it, PS pump, reservoir, and hoses. I also replaced the sway bar while I was there. I refilled with CHF 202 (The owner manual calls for ATF) and bled the system. Alignment and new tires. The steering is stiff and won't return all the way to the center.
The rack is a remanfacuted unit for IPD.
I got a couple of questions
1. Can using CHF instead of ATF causes the stiff steering.
2. Can the new sway bar, or sway bar links causes the issue?

I actually like the stiff steering. but this is my daughter's car and she is not a big fan!!
Than you for your help!!

The sway bar and end links should not affect the steering.

Using the wrong fluid does. Volvo use 2 types of fluid. Pentosin and ATF. Nothing else. I will defer to others who may have differing opinions.

Re-built racks from any source have been a hit or miss. I would first fit the correct fluid. Check with Volvo to confirm the right fluid as a 2001 I would have expected to be pentosin. The other things is you cannot mix fluid types.

If changing the fluid makes no difference then either the rack is bad or using the wrong fluid has caused an issue.

Looking up that CHF 202 and I see it's made by Pentosin. But I've never heard of it, so can't comment on if that's the problem.

Stiff steering may come from a rusty universal joint where the steering column attaches to the rack. Spray it with oil to see if that helps temporarily. If you can find where to buy one of these parts, let us know because they seem discontinued. See this steering diagram part 13. There are many part numbers for this so check carefully.

In my 2000 V70, I recently flushed the power steering with Asin Type-IV ATF and mine turns easily. The manual says power steering should use Volvo gearbox oil, part 1161540. That bottle says it's for "AW50-42LE (4 speed) and AW55-50/51SN (5 speed) as well as AWF21 generation I (TF80-SC), (6 speed), up to model year 2010." I made some logical leap based on other sources saying these transmissions use JWS 3309 spec fluid and Type-IV meets that spec. Thus I conclude that Asin Type-IV is similar enough to part 1161540 to use. I'm also drain/filling my transmission with it. Asin made the transmission, so I trust their brand of fluid.

Thank you for your input!!

I did some research earlier and found that C70s up to 2004 use ATF ( Dexron III)
https://blog.fcpeuro.com/volvo-power-st ... or-chf-11s

The owner's manual from the Volvo website calls for ATF.

I flushed the transmission fluid a few months ago, I have used AISIN fluid and am happy with it.

I will contact the dealer and ask about the type of fluid I should use. Will flush and fill this weekend and will report back. I really hope it is not the Rack.. , the one I have installed is still under warranty, but the replacement is kinda of pain .....

Was the steering stiff prior to replacing the rack?

It is a case of it is was ok in terms of feel before swapping, then the process of swapping has introduced a new issue.

or

If it was stiff prior to swapping and still is, then the rack was not the issue in the first place. Firefox makes a great observation that we have had people have issues with the lower bearing on the column and the universal joint where it fits to the rack.

I am assuming there was an alignment done after the new rack was fitted.

Hi,
No, it was not stiff before, it started to leak and I decided to replace it before the leak got worse. I sprayed the joint with WD40 and greased it,
If the car is on jacks, the steering wheel feels normal, easy to turn. There is no weight on the suspension.
Alignment was done after, it was bad after the Rack replacement. I also had it checked at a different shop just to double-check.

Entirely possible the new pump is bad or you still have air in the system to bleed. Try putting the front end up on jack stands and cocking the wheels each way for several iterations, see if it helps. If not, a new part isn't always a good part...

Hello,
So I got time to replace the Pentosin CHF 202 with ATF Dexron Vi. I used 3 quarts to flush the CHF fluid.. to be on the safe side :)
After bleeding the system, I can report immediate improvement. The steering wheel still does not return all the way to the center.
Next, I will take a look at the steering shaft bearing (the one in the rubber boot mounted to the firewall), it has been making noises and maybe it is slowing the steering wheel return.
