[850] Worn Tube Identification

Post by ToriWhite »

I wonder, is this tube important? Just ahead of the driver side rear wheel well; found it dangling- not touching the ground, but rusted a bit (shown) and rubbed through pretty bad against the rear wheel (out of frame)

I’m pretty sure Volvo doesn’t just throw these tubes on for fun, and Everything's “important”- but just for in terms of is it a SMOG thing I can ignore, or a brake line..

Parking brake cable. It should be mounted to the car, possibly the bracket just above it. Being as rusted as that it is almost certain the inner cable is rusted solid.

It is a bit of a job to replace them but not especially difficult. It requires the center console to be removed and the rear carpets raised from the rear doors to the center to allow the new cables to be fitted. The rear rotors and brakes will need to be removed from the hub to allow the new cable to be fitted.

Looks like a parking brake cable. Spray some penetrating oil in the crack dnd wrap it with tape to keep the water out. If it freezes up you need to replace the brake cable, an ugly job

Thank you two for confirmation, Parking brake is already shot; has been since purchase.. 10 years ago? (lord I’m getting old)

So no new harm, just underlining an existing item on The Eternal To Do List

When rear brakes are up, get new hats , parking brake shoes, and get those cables done.

I accidentally bought a pair of rear pads when fumbling with the front rotors recently.. maybe it’s a sign :?

I’ve got to get under there anyways; still have a strange grinding sound coming from that rear wheel well that I recently conflated with the front; something’s amiss I gotta pin down

That will be those delaminated parking brake shoes flapping around inside those hats

Did you have a specific thread in mind? I’ve been poking around the search term ‘Delaminated’; but haven’t seen much relating it to a grinding sound- that being said; it is the same tenor pitch and volume you hear whenever a rock somehow wedges itself between calipers/rotor- so I am assuming it’s Something brake related

Don't recall anything specific on brake delamination, but there may be. What it is this. If you know what a brake shoe looks like (if
not it is almost a semi-circle in metal with brake material on the outside edge) it fits inside the 'drum' which is on the inside of the rear rotors. Over time (many years) of heat cycles, the bonding material between the brake shoe metal portion and the brake material gives up. What this then does is allow the brake material to move outward and get jammed between the drum face and the shoes and it can get bad enough to seize the rear wheel.

The 'fix' is to remove the rear rotor and look at the shoes and see if this has happened. If not, but you know they have not been replaced in say the last 10 years, it is worth swapping the shoes out while in there. If you are going to fix the parking brake cables you will have to take the rear parking brakes apart anyways to fit the new cables.
