Dielectric Grease
Getting ready to replace both spark plugs and the ignition coils and I seem to remember reading somewhere to apply some "dielectric grease" to the ends of the coil boots before pushing them on. Is this true and needed? Apparently, the grease does not conduct electricity, so it shouldn't be applied directly to the mating surfaces (pins and sockets) of an electrical connection.

Nope for the reason you listed below.Mr. Detail wrote: ↑09 Dec 2021, 14:44 Getting ready to replace both spark plugs and the ignition coils and I seem to remember reading somewhere to apply some "dielectric grease" to the ends of the coil boots before pushing them on.
True dielectric grease is non-conductive and a sealant. It's function is to keep oxygen and water out of the connection. Heat shrink tubing or tape can serve the same function if you can get it to fit tight and seal out oxygen and water.Apparently, the grease does not conduct electricity, so it shouldn't be applied directly to the mating surfaces (pins and sockets) of an electrical connection.
Dielectric grease is selected for it non-conductive properties so that it does not contribute to galvanic corrosion.

Here is an article on Silicone vs Dielectric Grease.
"Summary of Dielectric Grease Vs. Silicone Grease
Upon checking several brands of dielectric grease, you might realize that most of them are based on silicone grease. That would further make the selection and differentiation process problematic."
http://www.differencebetween.net/techno ... ne-grease/
I have both greases, links below. The Permatex Dielectric did not say Food Grade so I purchased the Super Lube for plumbing o-rings and to moisturize besides giving a quick sheen to some leather and plastics. Super Lube Is Dielectric but not from Silicone Based Grease as those in the article.
I've use Superlube to lubricated connectors in the car such as head and tail lights, sliding door contacts, spark plug contacts and boots without issue. I try to use just a film except squeezing a little in the holes of connectors. Lubricating the clips of the connectors also helps the removal process the next time around.
Permatex 22058 Dielectric Tune-Up Grease, 3 oz. Tube (-54°F to 400°F)

Super Lube 41160 Synthetic Grease (NLGI 2), 14.1 oz Canister, Translucent White (-45°F to +450°F)

Superlube From Amazon Q&A:
Question:
Is this grease a synthetic based?
Answer:
75-85% hydrogenated polyalphaolefins, with CAS number 68037-01-4
15-25% mineral oil with CAS number 8042-47-5
1-5% antioxidant with CAS number 41484-35-9, which has no pretty name, but is chemically known as 3,5-Bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxybenzenepropanoic acid thiodi-2,1-ethanediyl ester
1-5% polysilane as a byproduct of 68611-44-9 - I think this is an ester of carbon & silicon based oils.
1-5% Polyether polyol CAS 25322-69-4
1-5% Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) CAS 9002-84-0 (aka, Teflon)
0.1-1.0% Proprietary additive
The MSDS is readily available on the internet, searching for "MSDS and "82333" see less

So back to my topic. Do I just apply a small amount to the inside of the boot tip?

I just rub a film on tip and neck of the spark plug and boot. If the exterior of the plug boot seems dry a little dab and filming will help also. Not sure how others put in on.Mr. Detail wrote: ↑10 Dec 2021, 07:04 So back to my topic. Do I just apply a small amount to the inside of the boot tip?
