Cylinder 2 miss fire have spark and fuel

Post by Milehighv70xc2 »

'99 s70 T5 220k miles, miss fire code 302, miss fire in cylinder 2.
Switched coil packs with cylinder 1, no change
New spark plug, no change
Switched injector with cylinder 1, no change
Coil out of cylinder with a spark plug in it and you can see it firing.
With the spark plug installed. If you pull the coil slightly off of the spark plug, you can hear the coil sparking to the spark plug.
I will do a compression check tomorrow.
So it seems I have spark and fuel and the injector doesn’t seem to be stuck open. When you pull the plug it is wet from fuel.
Since the plug is wet it leads me to think there is no spark. But my test say otherwise...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea what is causing the cylinder to not fire at all

ECM-3522 ( P0302 ) Misfire cylinder 2, emission. Faulty signal.

Condition
  • Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-35X2 is stored if the engine control module (ECM) registers that the engine is misfiring. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicates which cylinder(s) has/have misfired. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicates that the misfire has affected the emissions.
Substitute value
  • three-way catalytic converter (TWC) diagnosis shut off
    leakage diagnosis shut off
rear heated oxygen sensor control shut off
Possible source
  • defective spark plugs
    blocked/leaking injector
    uneven compression
    water in spark plug wells
    air leakage

    faulty fuel pressure
    low fuel level
    contaminated or faulty fuel
repeated cold starting where the engine coolant temperature (ECT) has not reached normal operating temperature between starts

Fault symptoms
  • engine misfires
    engine difficult to start
    poor performance
    uneven idle
engine not firing on all cylinders

Time to run compression test on number 2, and then the rest of the cylinders

And:
Wipe down #2 spark plug well to rule out conductive fluids in the well.
Swap Plugs to rule them out.
Swap Injectors to rule them out.
Smoke test intake system to rule out air leaks.

Compression test showed 0psi in cylinder 2. Smoke test showed smoke coming out of the dipstick and exhaust. Shop said bad rings and valves, which I find very unlikely. This is the second time cylinder 2 has lost compression. First time was a burnt valve. Guessing it is a valve again.

First time I have ever heard of a smoke test to check for piston ring issues. Smoke is not a good indicator for this test. The way I have always checked this is to use oil in the bore.

1) Check compression -dry
2) Add about a teaspoon of oil and test compression again. If compression rises then bad valves (these engines can be bad for burning valves in particular cylinder #2). If compression does not rise then then either bad valves or both rings and valves.

I would then do a borescope inspection of the cylinder to see if there was any obvious bore damage.

I saw your other post and not sure where the repair shop is coming from on the engine not being repairable. Unless there is a serious issue like a block crack I would suggest they are pulling your chain. I would check with another shop.

Neil.

Thanks for the replies.
I didn't understand the no rebuild part either. This came from the main Volvo shop in Denver. Guessing they didn't want to work on it. This is not my car so I don't have access to it at the moment
Oil in the cylinder was my next test to hopefully rule out bad rings.
How do you determine if the rings are bad if the compression doesn't change?
I will post back when I find out

Was it using oil and smoking before the number 2 failure?
