Engine Swap '96 850 (55 engine) What to Do?

Post by bistrohenry »

The head is cooked on the 200K plus '96 850. Getting a new (used with 125 K) long block and am looking for tips on what to replace/upgrade while doing this.
Planning timing belt replacement (is that somewhere in the database?) and water pump.
The car was running with all of its components and (hopefully) I will re-using as much as possible.
Your experience, strenght and hope is appreciated in advance.
Thanks,
Henry

The car is my 16 year old's '96 850 wagon which has 200K and too much into it to scrap and start over.
My 16 year old daughter's 1996 850 wagon is giving me new grey hairs to complement the space left by the hair that has fallen out....

I own a 1978 Saab GL as well.

I would deal with the timing belt, the tensioner, the rollers, and the water pump on the front of the motor. Those things will all be due at the 140 k interval anyway.

I think I would also replace the rear main seal and service the PCV system just because it is real easy at this stage. I assume you will be using your original intake manifold, if you have EGR it is also a good time to clean the EGR valve and the EGR hole in the intake manifold. Be sure to get an EGR gasket and a throttle body gasket. The camshaft seals are also quite easy when the engine is out of the car but they aren't that bad with it in. The only thing to watch out for if you do change the cam seals is to mark the camshaft sprockets so that you can line them back up - I used spray paint to mark the bolt holes.

A decent writeup is here:
