Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.
Did front strut replacements and I did not tighten the steering knuckle bolt (at the strut) to spec and just had the front wheel collapse in when the bolt / nut came undone and fell out after about 500 miles. Lesson learned. "Good n tight" is not "good enough" for steering knuckles. Re-did it with new OEM bolts and nuts at 75ft lb +90 degrees. Tow truck was 4 hours late and I deserved the wait as my penalty. Fortunately no one was hurt because it was found when the front end started to feel weird and car was pulled over..

Unfortunately you are not the first this has happened to! It is something that is easy to do in terms of getting it wrong!
Using the correct new bolt and lock nut is worth the price of the parts for the lower control arm ball-joint to knuckle bolt.
You were lucky as you said.

This thread is making me feel better about last night.. couldn't make it up the driveway on first go... very slick, not atypical for this driveway (probably would benefit from an AWD vehicle)... got a little distracted in reverse on my way down to give it another go and ended up stuck in the ditch about 3 inches from a bigger disaster with the culvert below.
No 4x4, winch or anything available but thanks for AAA who will be helping undo my mistake today.
