Disambiguation is a great word, which I will struggle to use!

So the lesson is, don't rebuild your transmission with hardware store bolts?

That is a good takeaway from the chart, yes :D

Also, don't use leftover IKEA shelf hardware on your suspension.

Matt,

Here is a table of typical torque value for a Bolt into steel dry or with anti seize and also for Aluminum.

I believe that this is for a Grade 8 bolt.

Note that the broken cam tool bolts in a another thread are 7mm at 13ft-lbs. That's why they break off and ruin your camshaft.

Automotive bolts are better than typical hardware store bolts, but aircraft are even better than automotive bolts. Aircraft bolts are better in a couple ways. They are made to fit the holes to tighter tolerances to improve shear strength. They are also made in many length increments so the threads are not in the shear area of the joint. Thread tolerances are likely better as well.

Get important hardware from

FCP …note often when you buy the Volvo blue box stuff, you get the hardware for the job too, front brake rotors come with the caliper slide bolts, for example

Tasha/Volvo Webstore….Volvo hardware is made by Bulten of Sweden. I don’t think they retail directly. You can find good part numbers and specs at Skandix.de

McMaster Carr

Belmetrics

Hardware store and Home Desperate/Lowe Quality hardware markings are put on my sharpie. Nothing critical for these.
