Remember when...?

Post by Sveedy »

Most everything you bought or used was made in America.

Broadcast TV was free. ( ok technically I guess it still is, but who uses an antenna, and do they really work )

Cable TV was commercial free ( remember that was the whole point in paying for it )

Home cooking was the norm ( fast crap didn't exist )

Diabetes was not that common ( maybe see above )

A blue collar worker could support a family.

A cup of coffee was just a cup of coffee - a beer was just a beer.

You got your medical advice from your doctor ( 'nuff said on that one )

The NRA was non - political ( and there were a lot less guns and shootings )

Credit was considered a bad thing ( if you couldn't afford it, you didn't buy it, except with lay-away )

Advertising was looked at as a way of convincing people to buy things that they didn't need, with money that they didn't have.

In another forum recently (an Apple forum, but mostly everything off-topic) I posted a reply to a thread that was essentially "Can you imagine the old days of air travel?":
I lived it in the 70s. I was young, but I saw it. We flew 747s to and from the States when we lived overseas.

They were never full. I always played with my toy soldiers across dozens of empty seats. I explored the plane, going up the spiral staircase to the bar. Nobody cared.

I got to meet the pilots in the cockpit and they'd give me a wing lapel pin. I have a British Airways flight log booklet somewhere. They used to give those out to kids also.

All these memories are of dark/dimly lit night configuration planes because of time-zone crossing.

Nice meals with real silverware... airports with very few people. We always found a seat in the terminals. Scratch that... we chose our seats in terminals. Drive up, pick up, drop off... no problems.
I use a TV antenna. It works fine on my 2008 Panasonic plasma TV, which still somehow works great. My son and I watch NFL games. The rest of the year the TV goes in the closet. The antenna gets the Big 4 broadcasters and that's all we need for that. For Monday Night games there's Yahoo Sports app on my phone and my son's iPad.

Yes, I remember all that stuff. Maybe some slight differences, because I grew up in Germany. America was always a bit ahead when it comes to technology, but that has levelled out years ago.

So while you guys enjoyed big color TV's, we had to make due with Black and White, and there was only one in the living room. Some great lessons in compromising I guess.

Also, I remember working in engine compartments with ample access and you could see the ground everywhere and no CEL's

How about 35mm photos and slides? I only converted to digital in 2007, and I still own all my cameras.

Those were the days!

My 2 cents.

Magnavox, GE & RCA TV's
Most everything you bought or used was made in America.

Rabbit ears, cartoons on Saturday mornings and Creature Feature with Bob Wilkins Saturday nights. The rest of time was out playing with neighborhood kids.
Broadcast TV was free. ( ok technically I guess it still is, but who uses an antenna, and do they really work )

Always had a TV in the home but haven't had cable since 1990. Brain drain.
Cable TV was commercial free ( remember that was the whole point in paying for it )

Wife still cooks dinner every night. I'll eat some but do my own low carb, high fat to stay Type 2 free. Breakfast or first meal in the afternoon. Veg Fruit Smoothie (2 portions) with Almond Milk, Half and Half and a large sprinkle of cinnamon and turmeric. Nuts are put into melted salted butter, cheeses and cream cheese and humus. Hard boiled egg and meats. Ketone is Key.

High school friend, still today, dad was a smoker, overweight and die of diabetes. I was not overweight till 3 years ago. No physical since 99. In August found A1C @14.8, Blood Sugar @497. This week my PA says I don't qualify for a CGM as I have "diet controlled diabetes" and don't use insulin anymore. Got tired of the 6 to 7 pricks a day and then on Thanksgiving saw my friend's 2 daughter both using CGM's with their Type 1. Gotta have it but on my own dime.

And own a home regardless how humble it maybe
After landing at SFO in 71 this was our first home (rental) for a family of 5. At 830 sq.ft home felt BIG as a youngster!

A blue collar worker could support a family.

Never drank coffee but only remember ringing up 25 cent a cup with unlimited refills when we owned a coffee shop. A restaurant really in those days.
A cup of coffee was just a cup of coffee - a beer was just a beer.

Friend who works for Pharma said he lost trust in the medical community. At 1:20 a Pittsburgh Steelers Team Physician and Triathlete.

You got your medical advice from your doctor ( 'nuff said on that one )

In China where you can't own one every kid use to get rifle lessons in high school.
The NRA was non - political ( and there were a lot less guns and shootings )

Took a loan once for 3 months so can get $1000 incentive when buying a car. Didn't want a credit card for the longest time but caved in but pay off every month so considered it a tool.
Credit was considered a bad thing ( if you couldn't afford it, you didn't buy it, except with lay-away )

Who wasn't glued to the Sears, JC Witney or Crutchfield Catalogs!

Advertising was looked at as a way of convincing people to buy things that they didn't need, with money that they didn't have.

Simpler times it seems.

Over the counter drugs like Actifed that worked and worked well.

Beef Tallow French Fries that tasted better, last longer and where healthier than what is served today.

Planned obsolescence was 20 years not 2 years.

Schools educated people instead of training them.

You also had to wait for the TV to warm up then adjust it before tuning it in. Houses with central air conditioning had dry crisp air that felt magical in Southern Florida where I grew up. Cars had big blocks under their hood! SUNOCO sold 107 octane leaded fuel. All soda pop was made with sugar. All clothes had union tags. June

Schools educated people instead of training indoctrinating them.
When prisoners were more well spoken than politicians today.

When prisoners were more contemplative and introspective than our politicians.

When prisoners had a better moral compass and if given the opportunity would be more redeemable and make better citizens than our politicians.

When repair manuals were printed on paper thicker than toilet paper ( yes Haynes I'm referring to you ), because they knew you were actually going to be using it.

We created empires , yes we stole countries….all with the cunning use of flags….

All of American was pro-choice. If you were female you could choose between being a teacher, nurse, Secretary, or homemaker.
