Fix your fancy gas cap gasket for $7

So I went to get my car smogged the other day and they told me that I needed a new gas cap. Why? It appears that there were cracks in the gasket and they said it wouldn't seal correctly, thus letting fumes escape. I called Volvo to get a price on a gasket. Well of course they don't sell that part, only a new cap. They quoted me $41! Taking a look at the cap I noticed how it's got a nice hanger that fits on the fuel door and also how the cap can rotate nicely around the hanger. OK, maybe it's worth it.

Then I looked at IPDUSA and saw they had a cap for $27. Still a lot when all I needed was that gasket. I still needed to pass smog, so I went to my local autoparts store and got a Stant cap for $7. It was nothing exciting and it didn't have that great rotating retainer and hanger. But it did have a gasket!

Yup, you guessed it. The gas cap on the $7 part is the same as the one on the Volvo custom cap! Woo hoo. I just pried off the old gasket and slipped on the new one. I put it all on the car and all is right with the universe again.

Cheap enough to give the seal a try or the entire cap. Will consider this option as the 08 C30 gets a code with each fill up. Son just clears it. Before lubricating the seal with silicone grease he would get 2 to 3 code with each fill up.

Spray or soak in seal in 303 Aerospace or use silicone grease from time to time for longevity. There is a guy on Youtube that soaps wiper blades in 303 before installation and suppose to last a long time. I've got a gallon but never tried it. Product is good regardless.
