I found an old post of mine on cost of ownership that I was proud enough to repost here again..
Put another way, it costs you about $2000 in gas to drive 15000 miles. Why spend $2000 in gas on a car worth $1000? Because you have to spend the same on a car worth $10000

Why spend $1500 per year on maintenance on a $1000 car .....see above.

Unless you can beat the cost of maintaining the old car for more than the next car costs plus the cost of money, it makes sense to repair. Of course, it always feels like you are hosed when it's big job, but that next alluring P80 or P2 will also cost you. Just ask our favorite Scot in Alberta!

Well even though I'm soooo close to having this engine rebuild / install wrapped up, I've decided to take a little bit longer and replace the transaxle seal at the trans while I have everything jacked up and sitting there. It looks pretty straight forward - should be able to keep everything together as a unit and pull it out. I'm also going to go ahead and replace the torque converter torx bolts; I don't feel that I can get the proper torque with the old ones ( maybe I got 25ftlbs, plus loctite, instead of 30 ), and if I did, then they might strip whenever they might need to be removed in the future. But I haven't found those bolts on Volvopartsweb, FCP or IPD. Any idea where I can get them ? Part number ? I thought they'd be readily available since I think they are meant to be replaced anyway.

Got all 4 rotors replaced after 70k km and brake pads replaced. surprised my fronts lasted that long. My passenger side control arm was in tatters and loose as a goose. Had about 1-2 cm of play in it when doing the shake test. Otherside was solid. Mechanic stuck a used one in at no charge as he said it was a safety issue and he is a good guy.

He advised that the intermittent rough start may be a dying cap and rotor as mine appears to be very old. Might pull one off the parts car or find a day to take a look at the contacts.

My indie shop apparently can't replicate the steering wheel locking up and are now saying it's a BBB Industries rack and not Cardone. Mechanic says he'll drive the car home tonight to check it again.

What's the chance it was a one-time glitch? (I mean, losing power steering even *once* does seem like a potential game-ender.)
