Yeah, I don't know how much I'd trust it after that, either. That's really strange that it would just be a one-time thing though.

That's my concern. If it happened once, it can happen again. Sheesh.

I would replace the rack with the best one I could find. A $1000 Volvo branded rack seems cheap compared to loosing your steering at speed. And if the car ever needs to get junked, you could try to resell the Volvo rack since you know it's quality.

I feel this resale value applies to all parts which aren't wear items (belts, etc) or consumables (brakes, etc). Seems especially true for parts which are discontinued, hard to find, or of questionable quality (racks, etc).

I got a TRW remanufactured rack for my car. They're about $350 on FCP. They're high quality units, none of that cheap parts store reman BS.

Replaced the blower motor in the XC90 today finally... MAN that was a pain. There is no room to work against all that sound deadening. Took way longer than it should have, but the blower works perfectly now. No more noise or violent vibration with it on high speed. Now we'll see if the lukewarm heat was due to lack of air movement or a heater core issue.
Also replaced the serpentine belt on the V70R last night. Old one didn't look too bad, but it's original as far as I know, so why not. Also topped off the oil... needed a quart after just 500 miles, and it doesn't leak a drop. It also doesn't smoke, which is confusing the hell out of me as to where it's going.

Edit.... this is what I found wrapped up in the fan. No idea how that got there, looks like an unwrapped shoelace or a piece of fabric.

What's the chance it was a one-time glitch? (I mean, losing power steering even *once* does seem like a potential game-ender.)
The chance is one that not even this risk perverse guy would consider for even a nano- second, even with the kids grown and a large life insurance policy.

Let me be the third 2nd (?) on the motion. Just loosing the hydraulic boost, making it hard - but not impossible - to steer is one thing. Locking up, as both of ours did, is cause for disassembly. Mine is still in a few pieces.

Holding pattern till I receive the flexplate to torque converter bolts, so some silly work was done. Stripped off the remainder of some old yellowed clear coat on the fuel rail cover, and took the buffering wheel to the spark plug cover bolts. I think they will look better
" chrome " than the stock black. And besides, she needs some " pretties " after all of this work ( or so she says ).
