Install battery charger plug, out of bumper or grill?

Post by 25psi »

2004 XC70.
Been searching about battery charger plugs and engine block heaters. Trying to figure out the best way to mount a battery charger plug on the exterior so I don't have to pop the hood.

I was all set to just run a wire from the positive jumpstarting terminal under the hood then out through the grill, but even when shining a light in the grill area, basically no light passes through between the engine bay and the outside of the grill. So this is a bit harder than expected to find a good way to run the wire.

Running the wire from the jumpstart terminal then towards the windshield looks like the closed hood would wear down the wire.

Would prefer the plug to be on the front of the car, but considered installing the wire and plug to the actual battery in the rear and then running the wire through where the battery vent hose is, and then mount the plug in the rear bumper somewhere. But apparently would have to drill a hole in the bumper for that.

Figured someone may have gone through this already and has a good idea.

Remove the bumper (5-10 minutes if doing it the first time), you'll find plenty of opportunities to run anything from the engine bay to the front of the bumper.

I would run it out the tailgate, same as I do for the trailer plug. Keeps it out of the road muck.
