Stuff like brake rotors will get a small kickback in scrap value (albeit not much compared to the price of a rotor). Same goes for suspension components, etc. I'm sure there is SOME kind of break they get for that.
Overall, I think most of it is just banking on most people not wanting to bother with returning stuff. And even someone like me, who doesn't like to leave any unclaimed cash kicking around, isn't going to bother on a lot of small things like drain plug washers, for example. I have returned them, but usually don't bother.
Tip for the really cheap people:
Anneal your copper washers to make them soft and deformable again by heating to red with a gas torch.

You can get free propane for your torch from kids camps closed for the summer.

Sunday: Checked the oil after changing it on Saturday and after sitting it was still low, so I topped it off. The owners manual says 5.X quarts, and "some models" 6.1, but I have about 6.5qts in mine, which put it at the max on the stick.

I also cleaned the dip stick in the kitchen sink, and installed the new o-ring I bought for it. The old one was hard just like the oil cap gasket had been. I then re-installed the now clean round warning tag that I had removed... not sure if I'll keep the tag on or not.

I also took it through the automatic car wash.... I've got a 30 day pass, which is a new thing for me. I think it was a special deal because it's a new facility. The pass was only about $7.

I also checked the mileage, now that I have the means to do it. Only 21.4 miles/US-gal, which is disappointing since that's mostly highway.

Spent Saturday and Sunday repairing a friends 98 V70 NA SE. 3 tasks to so:

1) Try and figure out the engine check light (emissions code) and repair
2) Fix the broken tailgate inner panel
3) Try to figure out the reason for the fuel flap being reluctant to work some times.

Had a mix of successes.

3) Fuel Flap - It was really slow to operate. Lubed it with silicon oil and then cycled it multiple times. It sped up considerably. Did not have time to disassemble the rear panels ( a job for another day with more time). Hopefully it keeps working.

Question: Does the P80 V70 not have the wire for manual operation of the release that runs back to the little flap for the tail light bulb access? Was that only a thing on the 850 wagons?

1) Took apart and found all the pipes under the front fender were fine. Certainly not the originals. Owner had the 2 'U' shaped connector hoses on the top of the carbon can and length of pipe for the carbon can to the relief value just forward of the 'A' pillar on the inner fender.
Replaced the 3 pipes and removed both the purge valve and the exhaust valve.Cleaned both and both work as they should. Also replaced the pipe between the purge valve and the filter unit as well as the one from the purge valve to the intake manifold. Both of those were really crusty. Had some correct diameter pipe in the stash!
Also ended up fixing the outer fender on the RHS while the inner liner was out.

WARNING: I have stated this multiple times! Do NOT use regular rivets to attach the mud-flap to the fender!! If you do they do not break if you catch the mud-flap on something and it bends the fender.

I was able to straighten the fender well enough so the liner fit again and painted the damaged paint to protect the bare metal.

Refitted everything and switched the code off as well as the Service light indicator. Not sure if I fixed it or not. Time will tell!

2) Tailgate inner panel repair. Friend bought the repair kit from Volvo. Un-like the Pro-Parts or Scan-tech kits the Volvo one does not supply the clips to re-fit the cover. 7/8 were broken. Fortunately I had just enough in my stash to replace them all.

The repair kit has 4 pieces of thin metal shaped to fit where the plastic mounts for the upper clips break. I bent the flat plates to fit as required by hand and made sure they were flat with a hammer and bench vice. Drilled 3 small holes in the plastic for the retaining screws that hold the plate in place. What a stupid design! The side screw runs directly under where the clip has to fit preventing it going fully home?! I removed the screws in the position and cut them to about half length and they then cleared the clip but still function as needed.

I will need more of the 2 plastic clip types needed as my stock is out now. I was staggered to find the clips are $3 each for both types!! That is daylight robbery! Found an online vendor in the UK that cost me $35 CDN including shipping for 100 of the lower 'horse-shoe' shaped clip in the tailgate panel and is used elsewhere like the side trim panels around the lower sides of the tailgate surround. Cannot find a source for the larger upper clip. Looks like I'll have to pay Volvo for those!

Finally decided today was the day to paint the re-conditioned front 'big-brake' caliper brackets for the 'R'. Been sitting on my garage bench since before Christmas. Need to get on with this as there is about $130 of deposit on the return of the old calipers and brackets!! The brakes with the big brackets for the 302mm rotors are hard to find so they understandably put a huge deposit on them. To get these Napa had to go a supplier in California.

Cleaned the calipers brackets with de-greaser and then painted with caliper paint. Thought the pain was really think, and as I was right beside my lighted bench magnifier, decided to check the instructions again. Tiny print and there it says, " Use in a well ventilated area at 70F/21C or higher temperatures. In Canada in winter?? Garage is at +11C ...............Hm.

Engineering 101 (basics) - " If all else fails and no bigger hammer is available, read the instructions."

Yup! Problem is the first coat was so thick due to the cold paint I don't think it will need another!

Come to think of it I don't think the garage gets to + 21C even in the summer!

Pop them in the oven at 200F for about 15 minutes until they are warm to touch. Turn them after 7,5 minutes, serve with Pentosin

I first chipped the jack out of the ice. Then installed the REAR brakes on Ekaterina the S70:AWD

I had to drop the left Control rod to reroute the brake lines correctly, wrote up a procedure to put that and the jack point back on as it takes some magic.

Did you remember to route the parking brake cable above the rear trailing arm mount/jacking point? They get riveted from the top using a plastic cable holder. One of those ones that are like a hoop with one screw hole.

If you forgot to rivet in from the top, use a small washer on the top and fit the rivet from below.
