Hey Kids!
I'm back in the market and am shopping for my mom as she needs a grandma'ma and great aunt taxi! I gave her my 2001 BMW convertible several years ago and the Bavarian Money Waster just isn't comfy enough for the gerries (god love them).
I tried to convince her to take Ben (my P2 XC70) but she's hesitant to stick me only with the wife's erm...Prius thing.
Here's what I'm looking at now. https://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/ ... 94645.html
The seller and I are emailing back and forth now about history and whatnot. I can keep you updated. If any of you are bored and have recs on if I need to look out for something when I pop the hood, that info is more than welcome in reply!

Looks pretty nice! These XC90s are pretty solid vehicles, not too much to worry about. The biggest problem with the 3.2 is what is known as the READ unit. That's what drives the alternator, and those can fail, causing a really nasty bearing noise. You'll hear it under the hood if it's an issue. Fortunately this isn't a very widespread issue, and I haven't seen it on as many as I would have thought.Starbuck wrote: ↑03 Feb 2022, 11:22 Hey Kids!

PCV noise is pretty common too, but that's an easy repair. That'll produce a whining/whistling noise.
Overall, it looks good for the price. Long as it's not leaking everywhere or making any weird noises, I'd go for it.

Ha...noises are my kryptonite as I am profoundly deaf. I'll try hard to hear any whining. Glove test then for the PCV?
XC90 began US life in MA so I'll slide under it and look for rusty rust in concerning places. I thought the Swedes figured out how to build cars for conditions like that though. It was maintained by Volvo stealerships up through 2018 then it moved to Florida. It has been in two accidents (one listed as minor), no airbag deployment noted and still the Volvo dealer bought it/took it in on trade afterward blah blah and did not immediately auction it off. This all from the Carfax.
I'll take a long hard look at the right front and pay close attention during the road test. I'm driving it tomorrow and I'll let you know the outcome.

Rust isn't really an issue on XC90s, so you should be good there. I don't know if the glove test is the best way to test this on these engines, but any issues should be evident. If there aren't any loud, weird noises, you should be good to go. I would probably do a little searching on the SI6 3.2 PCV to see if there are any other tests that can be done.

On any XC90 first gen, check the drive-line:
Front and rear hubs/bearings
Axles
Front and rear suspension (especially front as they are hard on those)
Due to the carefully taken picture avoiding the driver's seat, I would expect some wear and possibly the plastic part of the seat by the seat belt by the adjuster is possibly broken (not really a big issue)
Check service history for AWD system service and transmission service/oil change.
Good luck!
Neil.

The READ drive is a one shot thing. It’s a bit expensive but if you need it, it’s done and done.
There was some early trouble with the 3.2 engine and shafts ? But it was sorted by 2008.
A Mass car moving to Florida has the scent of a careful driver all over it so it’s probably in great shape. I just don’t worry about rust from Volvos unless I see this….
Congratulations on the family and that XC90 will fit your next 5 nicely so you can match mine

Alas. Unfortunately I need to thin the fleet these days, before I can pick up a project. That's a rare opportunity though, doubly rare to be local to me.
