The unicorn is for sale

Post by FireFox31 »

The unicorn P80 is for sale on eBay. A saffron 1998 V70R in Florida. The price of $14,500 seems too high. The listing is an embarrassment to the selling dealer, complete with blurry pictures, typos, and inaccuracies (claims one owner when Auto Check clearly says two). The selling dealer seems experienced in shifting junky old cars for a few thousand dollars or less (and baby training equipment?). So how did they acquire this rarity?

What really lurks behind the surface here? Are they listing such a rare beast on eBay instead of Bring A Trailer or Cars And Bids for fear of the scrutiny those sites will bring? Why miss the potential to have it bid up to nonsense levels on those sites? Seems like the only way to evaluate it is in person.

However, if the interior weren't black, I'd consider it. I actually wonder if it's possible to trade interiors with another R owner for their non-black parts.

Did Volvo make any P2 V70R in saffron? If so, perhaps I'll keep waiting for one of those.

Not that it matters that much but what constitutes a unicorn? 98 saffron R is uncommon but not that rare, definitely seen several on the fora.

That's a sketchy ad I agree.

No P2 saffron cars, you'll be waiting a long time.

I'd say if it is an T5-R or R in really good condition and original it is a (kindof) unicorn. (Not saying this is one ;) )

Interesting, I didn't know know that Saffron was uncommon but not rare. I've seen a few Laser Blue P80s for sale but never a Saffron. I seem to have just discovered the color in the last few months. This is why I called it a unicorn, having never seen one for sale during the past year that I've been actively watching.

All P80's are seemingly "collectable" these days though I know I'm preaching to the choir. P80 R's at the top of the list especially the wagons. I got three compliments in one day recently, my 96 855t. It's quite clean but not in eye popping shape. One guy doubled around, stopped me and went on about his 855r resto in progress. I've seen 855r's often somewhere between 8.5-18k depending on location, etc. As long as they aren't AWD you can still bring them back to life without breaking the bank, relatively speaking. And you don't need Audi repair skills to keep it alive. So, why not?

I was thinking along the lines of 855R...but included newer, in my head. Point being they appear to be worth a wad of money. I'd rather have an 855R than a 98 R for all the reasons we've discussed many times.

All 850 R's are FWD.

You're just saying avoid 98-00 V70R's because of the AWD? I'd agree, mostly because of the AWD suspension parts and NLA status.
