Brush hauling in Oklahoma

Post by volvolugnut »

Today was a trip to haul tree and bamboo brush from my home to my acreage. The trip was in 1976 Ford F350 with 16 foot flatbed trailer and as much brush as I could tie down on both.
The trip was loud (460 V8 exhaust is open and about 3 feet long under the cabin), slow (top speed about 35 MPH to keep brush from escaping), and short (5 miles each way).
I was passed only once by a black SUV. Traffic was light and the weather sunny. I stopped on the way home for gasoline. Estimated mileage was 6 MPG. Trip time about 2.25 hours. Sorry, no photos or interesting content.

Is the 460 F350 yours? My 78 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis had the 460 4V engine. Though the factory exhaust system was whisper quiet the engine screamed when the accelerator was floored. Sounded just like the Torino on Starsky and Hutch so naturally I floored it regularly just to hear it! The sound was thrilling lol! I recall it achieved 8 to 10 mpg. At $.70 a gallon who cared? Today it wouldn't work for most people to afford at $4.00 a gallon. The sky was so blue here in Ft. Smith and such comfy cool crisp air. I dread returning to Jacksonville to retrieve my S80. Still not ready as far as I can tell, since they won't return my calls... so still in a service loaner lol! June

Yes, the F350 with 460 is mine. Purchased from a coworker about 1990 for $400 and a promise not to complain about any problems. It was running, but barely. It had been hit in the passenger side of the bed. It is a Camper Special - long bed and extra cooling. But the positives were it was big, heavy duty and cheap. I always planned to pull trailers with it.

I replaced both heads immediately and got the parts from the metal scrap yard. Heads were $5 each and removed from engines in a huge pile. I had a shop rework the heads. In this tear down of the top end, I found the engine was remanufactured by Ford and bored .030 oversize. This made displacement 470 Cubic Inches. The plastic auxiliary fuel tank leaked so it was removed. Highway travel now included fuel stops about every 150 miles. About this time the muffler rusted out, but was never replaced.

A decade later, the engine got new main bearings and a new carburetor. The carburetor improved mileage about 10% or 1 MPG.

Another 15 years, and the lots of idle time and the carburetor needed cleaning and new metering jets. It still did not run right so the fuel tank was removed and the fuel lines cleaned. The rear brakes also needed new cylinders and hoses. And new front shocks. Other things replaced: fuel pump twice, master cylinder twice, brake booster, brake proportioning valve, alternator, many batteries, plugs and wires, tires of course (always from age not miles), and light bulbs.

Whenever I needed to haul something, I often had to make repairs first. However, some basic repairs would make it useful again. It has never been a daily driver, unless I was hauling something daily. It has hauled lumber, pumpkins (full loads), rock, sand, Christmas trees, irrigation pipe, many cars, furniture, and brush.

I have all the parts (some used) to put a dual exhaust on soon.
