Ok, here's where things stand. All those bits are fixed. I'm watching the Super Bowl™.
While I was in the trenches and the forum was down, I upgraded the forum software version to 3.3.5, the latest stable phpBB release. But moving the php version from 7.3 to 8.1 failed, and I reverted.
However, and this is a big however, I'm going to try again with php 8.1. It's worth a good 10-20% page load speed improvement. I'm a sailor, and this speed improvement is a siren.
I'll put up a new announcement when I'm doing this.

BB, php goes between the Web server (software) and the database. I could make a thousand analogies, but it's just the middle thing of three thingies.
It uses the data from the database and cooks it up into HTML that the Web server software sends to you and your browser when you request a page.
I know all this stuff sounds horrible to many, and I don't blame them. I used to be one of them. The more I was exposed to it (late 90s), the more comfortable I felt. Then one day I suppose the beauty of it all hit me. It's all about squeezing efficiency out of a given set of tools. It's beautiful.
