They are plastic.
Once polished you can re-coat them with 2K clear coat specific for headlights to prevent them clouding up again for a long time.

Could possibly be worth fixing, it's cheap enough.MoVolvos wrote: ↑17 Feb 2022, 11:01 Parts or worth restoring? The headliner seems too tedious and then there's the actual damage. Tires alone worth the entire rig.

bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑17 Feb 2022, 09:30 Once I got home, I polished the headlights again because they were NASTY.
I used the Turtle Wax kit that I had gotten for my '05 Outback, and I was pleased with the results. Cheapest one at Walmart, and it works incredibly well for what it is. Normally I just sand them out with 500/1000/1500/2000 then polish with PlastX, but I like to try these kits every now and again.
With LOTS of effort, I got the rest of the clear coat off the driver side headlight. It seems someone sprayed clear on these headlights before we bought the car, since there's cracked up clear coat on the rubber seals around the lights. I hit the passenger side with 400 grit to break through the clear coat since it was taking entirely too long with the now worn out sanding pad from the kit, and there are still some sanding scratches in the lens. Not a big deal, I'll take care of that eventually. Huge improvement from what it was.
My xc90 headlights never come out that nice.

All that paint on the knuckles and other parts were cleaned back to bare metal and painted with POR-15. The product is OK and is about the best we get on this side of the Atlantic, but that ain't saying much.
I masked where the contact points were, but it is easy to carefully remove excess over paint with a scraper or utility knife blade.
Problem with powder coating is not getting it where you don't need it. The other thing is I have had several parts powder coated over the years and it may be the coaters I use, but it does not seem to last even with the low mileage I do. That is part of the reason to take the car off the road in the winter months. As I don't really like taking a car off the road for any time it may be getting ever closer to moving the car on.

I honestly couldn't believe how nicely they came out. I've done these 3 times now, if not more, and they always end up decent, but not great. I'm really happy with the left one. I'd like to polish out the right one more, but like I said, no big deal for right now.
I need to do this on the S40 at some point, but fortunately they're not that bad at all. Just a light haze you can kind of see from the right angle. Volvo used a THICK layer of UV coating on these headlights, so it's a pain to break through it.

Great job on the headlights! Like mentioned above, they almost look new! I have had a try with our 06 XC70 but really needs the lights removed to do it right due to the curves of the light and the hood proximity. On the 'to do' list still!
Did a PnP run today. I'm clearly losing it as who in their right mend goes when it is -8C with a windchill and light snow??!
Best part was I was not going for stuff for myself. As it was 40% of prices this weekend, and a forecast for 6+" of snow tomorrow and into Sunday with temperatures falling to -20C today it had to be!
Trouble is we rarely get P80's in anymore in the local junkyards, so with 2 fairly recent 98's (S70 GLT and V70 base) it was time to man up and go!!
Wasn't too bad but the usual commercial harvesters had been through so not too much to get. Strangely there were a couple of headlights (one in each car and opposite sides) worth getting. Right side has an ok lens and perfect glass, left side has a broken glass but excellent lens. With the discount I paid $12 CDN for each one with all bulbs and the pig tail!!
The RH glass is for a friends car that looked like it had been shot out with 3 large holes in the glass after a Trans-Canada highway run west and back.
Also pulled a wagon fuel flap solenoid to try to swap with the same car as the headlight issue. In-spite of lubing the original it is still intermittent. Swapping the solenoid will hopefully help to identify if the solenoid is bad or the wiring which I suspect. At $5 it is worth it.
I still have to check if it will fit my 2000 'R' but I pulled the engine cooling fan and surround. I don't need the fan but the surround in my car has a crack in it. Not sure how that happened but no one owned up to it!
My hands were too cold to remove the fan so they took pity and didn't charge for it. $20 CDN.
I have only ever seen one MCC control unit in years and that is on the 'headlight' car. So when I saw one in the V70 base it had to come home as I don't have one in the stash! Took a few minutes to figure out how to remove. Pull the outer 2 buttons and remove 2 x T25 Torx screws behind them. Looks in great condition and buttons don't look 'sticky'. Pricey at $20 CDN as that is what I normally pay for the ECC units.
Also pulled a bunch of other small bits and bobs as well as a bunch of relays as they were only $2-3 each. Strangely the fuel relays were still in both cars?
Almost forgot that I also pulled the 2 purge valves to try swapping with the same challenge 98 V70 NA. Worth it for $3/each! At least they may help in diagnostics.
So other than freezing the particulars, it was a successful trip and most of the parts will find new homes when others need them!

Joking aside, it was not a good day for removing plastics as it was so cold. Plastics just snapped off or shattered!

An Heroic run, Neil, well done. Glad somebody has the access to yards with P80s, and the heart to harvest.
