AWD stainless origami 1387592

Post by deano1 »

The original rear caliper protectors on my S70 AWD were getting pretty sad,, meaning pretting friggin rusty! You know when they're so rusty that they really have no integrity left and should be tossed? Yeah that rusty.
So I had a little some spare time and 304 stainless so i whipped up a couple new brake protectors. Not sure why Volvo thought these were necessary, But if those crazy swedes put em there then they must be very important.
Oxforfd coma?,,,

All I can think of is to keep stones out of the calipers on AWD cars. Strangely my car does not have these now long NLA parts fitted. Guess it may be down to a different caliper type to that fitter to all other AWD P80's.

Nice job by the way. Clearly you have some skills. Maybe you should put them into production!

Nice fab skills! If I sent you a pic of AWD backing plates would you take a look at doing those? They are a more complex shape which requires some hammer and dolly work, and are 30 cm round, also they are chiral.

I bet I could find you two customers quickly, but appreciate that you really need a run of 10 to cover setup time, etc.

Neil…there is a chassis break in 1999 for rear calipers on AWD. I have the early version and also do not have those protectors, of course they could have rusted away or been lost.

Dean, here’s a pic of the backing plates we seek. Basically a double dish with a thick lip. Then a cutout for the caliper.

Could I just use a 20tonpress and round mandrels to press these out of 304 or mild steel in three operations? Then cut out the caliper clearance?

Thanks gentlemen for those kind words regarding the "SS caliper protectors" .
Volvo must have had great hopes for the off road prowess of these AWD versions of S70 & V70 hence caliper protectors and those cute mini debris flaps mounted just forward of rear wheels.
Also notice on the YouTubes some guys with angle gear upgrade and welding the VC some are then taking this P80 chassis racing! :o
Those chiral designed backing plates "could" be done with a lot of development and research time involved. Not as easy as symmetric design of the caliper covers so definitely not a Saturday morning project.
I advise to keep your currant backers fresh coated with thick black rust paint at each brake job.
Cheers

Must be missing, but not 100% sure if all were fitted. I know a 98 'R' in Europe had them as I sent a pair to Germany to a friend a few years ago. I had them powder coated for him as I was running a bunch of parts through as a batch price so didn't add anything to my cost.

Above are what is know as 'rocking horse poop'. Not only AWD backing plates, but 2000 'R' backing plates note the difference to yours with the extra cooling holes.

Once you cross the Southern border it’s known as “Unicorn tears”

Those R plates look really funky.

I’m thinking I could press a plate of round steel to form the rim, then form the bowl

The parking brake shoes have to ride on this so the depth of the bowl is important.

Drill the holes , cut a slit so it can slide over the bearing.

Only the 2000 'R'. Again now unicorn parts as NLA. When I was looking for these 6 years ago I only found 2. One in Vancouver and one in Montreal and they were re-built units.

If these ever fail I will have to look at the Volvo change over kit they came up with using P2 parts.

I’m seriously thinking of forming these in plastic.
