98 S70 N/A M56 Manual stainless steel shifter bushing replacement

Post by theWIFES_S70 »

Spent the other day doing "routine" maintenance... You know, replacing all the engine mounts and succeeding at getting everything in, only to break a ground wire and to have no way whatsoever to press in the upper engine torque bushing! So she sits for another day...

While staring at that beautiful inline 5-cylinder engine, I finally decided to do something relatively easy...

I picked up these stainless steel shifter bushings on eBay for $11 shipped. http://www.ebay.com/itm/VOLVO-ALUMINUM- ... D100102%26 It was as simple as carefully removing the airfilter box and accessing the bushings.

The brass ones cost $3 more so I decided to go the cheaper route... The OEM ones were all loosey goosey and broken so I'm sure this will be better in the long run. Have many people tried these things out? Do they make that much of a difference? I haven't gotten a chance to try them out just yet. So I can't report on how they feel. They do look nice though!

What's the report on these? My 1999 doesn't shift as nice as my P2 and I'm wondering if this is part of it.

It's significantly tighter and more accurate. I'm glad I did it. It wouldn't hurt to check it out. When I removed the clip holding them in, I noticed that the metal sleeve had torn from the bushing and you could see how something like this could affect shifting.

Holy crap!!! I just gave them a shot of silicone spray and my car shifts with a finger now!! My bushings are badly elongated (TMI - too personal) so Ill look for new ones. Anyone with VIDA who can feed me the part number, appreciated..

I am inspired by the King Marco from Queens...

Well,it gets better.

My listing shows you can't even buy the wear bushings, you have to buy the genuine Volvo shift cable at $150 ..

Looks like something I can actually do myself. Hoping this will fix some of my inconsistent shifting issues.

And, you'd have to buy two cables!! I wonder how different the car would shift with two new cables, though. I remember replacing our throttle cable and it felt like we'd gained thirty horsepower!

I can't wait to see how you fabricate shifter bushings for 99-cents in parts!

Out of old delta link rubber bushings of course - hole saw and a drill to match the shaft diameter.

Ill add a pic to show how nasty mine are.

Challenge accepted.

5/8 heatercore hose, 5/16 silicone hose, and stock bushing sleeve in the center with a bracket preventing the cable to come loose.
