Was it an aftermarket replacement that just went out on you? That might explain why it broke.

Looks like it to me, as it has/had no marking on it...but that means the original broke too!

True! But that counts as one broken "real" switch, not two. So no reason to suspect there is a particular issue with them going put on your car. Yet ...
