Transmission won't grab

Post by SnowCrow »

I can't be the only one with this issue.... my '02 v70xc made a hard clunk and then turned into a skateboard where the only thing that would hold it in place was the e-brake. So I decided to try and replace the angle gear to see if that was why.... I got a donor 01 v70xc and pulled both motors on both cars and put the 01 transmission on the 02 since that transmission on the donor, would hold it in place with park. So I got the swap done, transmission filled and everything hooked up as well as a new bevel gear. I went to go drive it and all it gave me was a very weak drive and very weak reverse. The more I topped off the atf (liqui moli) the more the drive and reverse completely just vanished. Now it sits with park holding it and me SOL after taking over 2 months to do the swaps.

Anyone have any idea what I could have going on?

Do you know if your put in a good working transmission?

Overfilling ATF will cause foaming and loss of pressure.

vtl is asking about the transmission itself, not about the transmission fluid.

You need to determine the fluid level and make sure it is right, it may be it was overfilled already. Guessing or estimating the level will not work. There is an impossible-to-reach dipstick, do you remember it from the install? This should help: viewtopic.php?t=11893.

I was answering about the transmission and the fluid. I filled it per dipstick reading. It may have been over filled but I didn't want to chance running it dry so when the dipstick was dry when it was cold, I topped it off to that point. Ipd and the dipstick both came up with 4 quarts to go in. I don't know that the transmission was good or not cause the car didn't start even. I knew that it held itself in park and that was a better sign than mine where it wouldn't even hold itself with anything but the e brake.

OK, I see! So you have checked and know the fluid is at the proper level, we can go from there.

This suggestion is a stretch especially if park is holding but I'm trying to think of what could be wrong if the trans was fine as seems reasonable - are the front drive axles fully seated?

Definitely fully seated hahaha that was a fight for sure but I got them both. If I bought another transmission, would I have to do a relearn on it for sure?

Watch this guy swap a volvo clutch in in a day on the driveway.
No lift .
Drops the tranny on his stomach and drags it out.

Seating the axles should be easy, they just pop right in. That makes me wonder if something is wrong with them.

Not sure what you mean by re-learn. And I'm not very knowledgable about transmissions!

That's a good one!

Drops it down at 17:45, by 19:45 he has bench-pressed the replacement back in.
