I hate those stupid brackets. I don't know why Volvo didn't use a better method of securing them to the intercooler. They ALWAYS fall off.

A torn boot and rumble from the right front mean the cv axles have to come out of the Rescue R for the first time in the cars sad life.

It is very, very uncooperative.
I hate the thought of having to pull the whole mess, knuckle and all, and somehow chuck it up in the hydraulic press.
I'm running out of stuff to drive.

I know that feeling... seems all my cars have broken in some way over the past week. Fortunately my replacement air spring came in today for my E39, so I can have a few MPG driving that compared to my X5!
My lazy exhaust repair on the R finally let go, so it's time to let that sit and get some work done. One project is installing the RIP kit that I've had for months.

Pressing out the axle shaft with that tool looks intense. I have always used a wood block and gentle hammer taps to pop it out. Maybe I should be more careful and use a press.

I am about 2/3 through a timing belt change. I feel like I've been beaten with a club.

Everything is re-installed but the belt itself. I was just too tired to carry on and I want to be sharp when I'm putting it on there.

Yeah, it was a little nerve racking when I did it too. I wanted to be very sure of the positioning of everything before I called it good. I've got several thousand miles on mine, now, and I still have yet to pull the cover again to see what it looks like now..... my belt was drifting slightly, so I'd like to check on that, plus check for any coolant seepage from the new water pump, and see if I see any oil from the cam seals that I did not replace.

Over the years I've done a few TB's on 240's and 740's, also one on a Porsche 951 and a Porsche 928s. The job doesn't intimidate me at all... but I'm almost 60 now. Rolling around on the ground in Minnesota-- it was sunny and 32 -- was just more stress than my body liked. And it was one of those days where "flow" wasn't happening.

But the car sure needed it. Water pump was weeping, and the belt had tiny cracks. So assuming I don't blow the thing up tomorrow, it was worth it.

Oh man....I would not want to be outside doing that today. Our weather was about the same as you describe, and I didn't even want to do my plug wires. I'm so over the cold weather, now. I'm ready for sunny and warm.

Ouch, and I tore apart my newest parts car in the 62 degree sunny weather here today. Every time I complain about it being too cold here, I remember how much worse it gets!
....but I still hate anything under 60!

I thought I was tough until I found a grandmother doing a power steering rack outside in 15F weather

I’m a soft bellied wimp mechanic.

Here’s my secret with TB. I use a 30mm box end to to turn the crank pulley to set the marks and to check timing when installed

I’ve found the same 30 box end works perfectly to push the belt down and then slip it off onto the water pump pulley last. This is not Volvo approved , but MVS tested. The (mechanical tensioner if applicable) and idler pulleys should be loose when you this. Slip the belt on, then go back and set those to torque specs.

Go through two complete revolutions confirming timing marks
