Coolant leak from turbo side of engine?

Post by azureblue »

Just when I was ready to replace the subframe bushings, my 2001 V70 got incontinent - it is leaking from what seems to be some place above the subframe cross member, more to the driver's side of the car. I put a catch pan under there and saw it drip, but finding the leak from the top in near impossible. And i think it just leaks when the system is under pressure... I plan to jack it and try to find it from under, tomorrow, so where should i look?
Thanks

PS - Checked the two hoses at the firewall, but they were dry

There are two small rubber hoses in the metal lines that carry coolant to and from the turbo, definitely check those. #9 and #10.

Thanks - more plumbing back there than I thought. Judging by where the drip is, I am going to guess hose #8. I wish I could pressurize the system, nut I don't have that gear. I will give it a look today..

Whatever you do, use only Volvo genuine parts for the hose(s).
Best is to replace them all...

yeah - I plan to get them at the dealership because they have them in stock.

BTW, who keeps the belly pan? Mine is getting brittle.

#8 is a copper crush washer, on a metal line.

The only rubber cooling hoses in the turbo cooling circuit are 9 and 10.

Sorry - typing without glasses on... yeah it's 9 and 10. My bad. I tried to get a visual of 9 but couldn't see it. For sure, the leak is right in that area - my car anointed me a couple of times while I was under it, and i could see where it was dripping off of..

I found Robert's 2 vids - one for supply and one for return. Of course the leaky hose is the PITA hose.

The top rubber hose - the straight one, is held on with those *(^# pinch clamps. It's in good shape but I assume the lower (inlet) uses the same type of clamps. So how do I get them loose, especially in the location the hose is in? I think I will replace the lower hose for now...

PS - it's leaking from between the hose and the metal pipe - IOW it looks like the clamp is not tight. But it's one of those crimp clamps - I think the proper term is Oetiker . First thought is to replace the clamp with a screw type. Is this advisable? The hose looks fine a little swollen but it feels firm. While replacing just the clamp is a pain, replacing the hose would be a bigger pain....

Oetikers are the right clamp to use. Screw types work , but they rust and loosen too.

At the very least, use the closed band type by Norma or ABA , not hardware store or Amazon junk
