Harness from '96 installed in '95 or not :?:
I feel there are some communication issues, I'll try straightening them out.

In my first post, installing the harness I meant plugging everything in. The only swapped thing on my friends -95 is the -96 engine. Not gearbox, harness or ecu.

MAIN ground from the battery goes to transmission housing :!:

From '96...they have chipped keys.
Can you explain why the trans need the ground, so I can understand how the car works better?

Yes I know this. I have experience with 850 but never done any engine swap.

misha wrote: 31 Mar 2022, 16:15So....you bought a non running engine from a project car and it also will not run in your car :?:

Basically...you should just install the engine from '96 and keep the original harness and ecu from '95.

If you did that....check the cam sensor orientation which abscate mentioned...scrub the paint on transmission where main ground from the battery needs to bolt on and you should be good to go.
My friend purchased a unknown engine, and yes we basically only installed the -96 engine to the -95. It has the -95 gearbox because the speed sensor is different to the -96 and we played the safe card there.

The issue is it might have paint between the engine block and transmission and thats why it gets bad ground.

I just feel like it doesnt matter if the engine is bad or not, the fuel and spark shouldnt be affected by a (for example) low compression engine?

Ah thats now clear then. I got first you switch harness so thats why asked so it would have explained something.

As if then not touch ecu or harness otherwise i would suggest yes go check all what may been touched while installation of the engine or taking off. If just unplug and plug back sensors then its kinda hard fry the ecu.

Add grounding for transmission.. is transmission automatic? on automatic the Pnp switch only allows starting in N or P section.

I say this because even if you bypass alarm relay preventing turn starter you dont fool yet ECU as it needs get okay signal from immobilizer to let have spark or fuel. (Not gas cars, liquid)

It's a manual.

Someone has mentioned pulling fuse 33 for the alarm and if it were to be immobilized it should also set the alarm off if i recall correctly.

And to update further, I went to check the engine block for any vacant holes to run a ground to. Well I noticed something while disconnecting plugs.

Thats the engine management system relay, yes? The grey one above the fan. Previous owner did a not so great fix for that wire, so I went and got a better plug with all 4 attached and sealed, and I spliced them to the harness.

Some success! The diagnostic unit is working as intended, I havent checked fuel or spark seperately but it didnt spin endlessly now. It starts to sputter and thats when its time to shut off and wait for my friend and we can continue working out the kinks.

The thread will live on until my friend drives away from here with the 850!

Yeah, that's the main FI relay. That'll definitely cause it to not run.

That's main fuel injection relay...it powers the injectors,iac valve....etc.

After further cranking and using starter gas it started and instantly laid itself on a stable idle for the 5 seconds the car was running. The 19T turbo is blown as you can hear in the video, and it was sipping oil after I turned the car off.

Great update.

I searched for every weird sound and swapped out a tensioner to the belt, the rotor and distributor cap. A vacuum hose was not mounted. Swapped out the 19T to his old 15G, filled the system with coolant. Bled the clutch and mounted everything back together. Took it for a short test drive and it actually worked lol.

Small step back when I called the owner and we took a test drive. Full throttle to 4k rpm for the first time and the left axle popped out. Bad install by me and the splines got warped, luckily he had a few laying around.

"New" axle in and I pushed it during the small test drive and it was a success. Call owner again and we lubed every brake pistons and bled the brakes. And he drove it home. I'm so happy I did this, his face said it all when he drove it.

2.3L got that low end grunt that my 2.0L doesnt have. Pretty jealous tbh.

Last pictures, solved thread and I hope this thread will help someone else in the future.
