1992 940 GL won't start, but turns over

Post by Madzdad »

Greetings all,
Just got my first Volvo, Bought it for my girlfriend to get around town and to work. 1992 940 GL. Got the car for cheap, and with cheap comes repairs. Its got some issues, nothing too serious, except for the not starting part. The last time it was started was in April 2010, then it sat all summer. Flat tires, no biggie. I bought a new battery (Bosch), New Plugs (NGK Gap at .28) New wires. The car turns over like a champ. It has a full tank of gas. I cant tell if its getting a spark or there is no fuel delivery. I checked all the fuses and relays, all is well. Should I hear the fuel pump when I turn the key or no? All the grounds are good, Everything that should be plugged into something is. Personally, I'm a Saab guy, and I can fix them, so this shouldn't be an issue for me. Can someone tell me where to start as I need this on the road asap.

Thank You in advance.

Bill

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
I'm a Saab guy
Nobody's perfect. :)

To check for a spark take out one of the plugs, put it back into the plug lead and, using insulated pliers to hold it, place the spark plug on a metal surface on the engine. Then crank the engine to check for a spark. No spark indicates an ignition problem.

If you have a spark move on to fuel. You should be able to hear the fuel pump, momentarily, when you switch on the ignition. I believe the '92 940 GL has the Regina fuel system so there should only be one fuel pump in the tank. The fuel pump relay is located in the main relay board behind the ash tray. It is in the second row on the left. Put your finger on the top of the relay and switch on the ignition. You should feel a click in the relay if it is working. If you don't feel a click check the fuel system fuse and replace if necessary. If the relay still doesn't click give it a hard flick with your finger and try again.

Post back with results.

Bill.

Turns out feeling a click from the fuel pump relay isn't enough as it has 2 internal relays. My issue was that I had no power on fuse #11, which is fed by the white relay. Turns out the diode in the relay was broken. Replaced it, now both internal relays work as they should.

Cheap fix, €0.10 diode vs a brand new relay
