As I pointed out I wasn't satisfied with the performance of the Overdrive (Clutched) Pulley that I purchased. It had stopped working. After I removed it I was able to get it to ratchet but it wasn't smooth and it would get stuck and stop working. I do have this identical part on my LR2 with the Volvo 3.2 and it works perfectly.

So as ABSCATE correctly pointed out you do often get what you pay for.

And because I was in there I also decided to get a new Tensioner

MVS Readers,

I started this thread to show the cost of a ~10 year old P3 Volvo.

The cost that I am tracking is Vehicle cost which I am trying to keep under $10K. I haven't been tracking the cost of Taxes, Registration, Oil changes, Brakes, Tires or Fuel. I did this because these cost vary significantly depending on where you live and I wanted this thread to be useful to people that don't live in my Zip code.

Having said that I am going to share something that my son sent me.

My Son is driving from Northern California to Southern California and he took a picture of the dashboard that I thought you might like to see.

The picture was taken about 190 Miles from my house and it is mostly highway.

Not a bad result for a 12 year old car with 150,000 miles

The EPA highway rating is 27 MPG so lets just say that the S80 can still meet that rating

I posted my question over there because their suspension is very similar to my 2010 S80 and they seem to break a lot of wheel bearing.

Our 2013 XC90 with close to 160,000 miles has front wheel tire noise. It was due for a tire rotation, and the tire tech pointed to front driver tire for its uneven wear; suggested a wheel alignment check. We run our cars on Pirelli; the tire noise disappeared after the rotation; it was in early May.

For diligence, I scheduled an early morning wheel alignment at a local Firestone (our go to shop for alignment for many years), and the tech said alignment is good, it may be the suspension that is causing the tire wear. These tires are more than 4 years old with 30,000 miles on.

Fast forward, now the intermittent tire noise is back. The noise is well audible over the newly paved asphalt; and a minor pull to right.

All suspension is original. I've started to collect suspension parts. Local Volvo had a 20% off day so I picked up a set of front wheel bearing for $160 each.

I haven't posted for a couple weeks.

I am still fighting the vibration at the front end of my S80.

Here is what I've done.

1. replaced the front right wheel bearing

2. replaced the front left wheel bearing

3. had the wheel balance checked at my trusted tire store (and discussed possible alignment issues with the technicians)


Here is where the story gets convoluted. After replacing the wheel bearing things seem improved but still not as good as it was two years ago. Replacing the bearing is time consuming and I was anticipating a better outcome.

So I went to the tire store to get the balance checked and it wasn't perfect but it didn't take much bring it into specification (this is the same store that balanced these tires originally and I use them for all of my cars). After the minor balance change the vibration seemed about the same.

Note: the front tires are worn strangely, if you run you hand around the tire clockwise it is reasonably smooth however counterclockwise has ridges that catch your hand. The technician at the tire store told me that a small balance problem and/or an alignment problem won't cause that to happen. He indicated that I need Struts/Shocks.

The ride is really nice on the S80 so I have resisted changing the Struts. But I trust the Technician at the Tire store and so you can guess what I recently ordered.

The tool that I bought on EBay to remove the wheel bearing worked well with the exception that I had to install some spacers to press the new bearing in (I used the pins that came in the kit but they were too long so I had to lay them flat instead of inserting in the holes)

For removal the tool worked as expected.

PS the front brake rotors we getting rather worn out so I decide to replace them while I was in there. Amazon will lower the price of their inventory if it doesn't sell so I got two extremely high quality rotors for an amazing price. List price is $155 for the pair and I paid $29. EBC Brakes RK1500 RK.

I've been busy so I haven't had a lot of time to work on the Volvo.

I do have a few updates.

1. I started this thread to chronicle the S80 and see what it would cost me (Repairs) and my son (Fuel) and to see if it could be done inexpensively.

2. My Son bough a new car, so maybe I should close this thread.

3. Note: I still have the S80 and my niece is using it and I am still maintaining/repairing it. So maybe the thread continues until I sell.

With that in mind here is my latest repair.

I purchased new shocks for the rear (Bilstein B7) and removing the old shocks wasn't too hard. I did use air tools to make it significantly easier. Doing this job without an impact driver (Pneumatic or Electric) would be problematic for the bolt that holds the lower mounting bushing. I did try to remove it with a breaker-bar but the S80 wasn't high enough for me to get a good angle so I gave up. If I had a lift then getting a good angle wouldn't have been a problem. My garage is full so I replaced the shocks on the street in front of my house.

I am still dealing with strange Tire wear and the Tech. at the tire store that I use indicated that I had a Shock/Strut problem and not an alignment problem.

When I disassembled the old shocks to get the dust cover, spacer, and upper mount I was very surprised by what I found. The first on came apart as expected. For the second shock holding the bottom and pressing the impact gun on the top nut collapse the shock. For anyone unfamiliar with this the shocks are filled with Nitrogen under high pressure to prevent the oil from foaming during use and if the Nitrogen leaks out then you get exactly what I found.

Special Thanks to the Technician at the Tire store that pointed me in the right direction.

Its really hot here during the day so I did the work as the Sun went down and I didn't have time to take any pictures.
