So many many years ago, when I was a youngster living in the D.C.area, some of us found out that you could mail your cars title to a judge in Alabama, who would give you an Alabama address and plates, which would then be sent back to you with your original title. All for about $20. My address was Route 2, Andalusia, Alabama. I've still never been there.
We were all driving around with Alabama " Heart of Dixie " plates, in D.C. In the 70's. Think about that for a sec....

States are onto this. California actively looks for out of state plates parked in apartments, and if you are there for more than 30 days….they come knocking.

Smog is the driver there.

We pay one time sales tax on registration , for the declared value on a form. After that , registration is about $30 a year

We pay yearly registration based on value, so new cars are probably paying 500, 600. I pay about $50 for old cars. You can also pay one time for permanent plates - boat trailers, cars you’re going to keep 10 years.

Yup, that's how it is here too. It can get ridiculous, because the values the DMV comes up with are all over the place. Our permanent plate option is limited to trailers, though.

I think I maybe paid a little over double the yearly on Betty the 2004 for permanent plates.
