All modern alloy wheels are painted; oven cleaner is obviously a strong base - although 'Easy Off' is no longer straight lye - so good instinct, proceed with caution. I used a slurry of Dawn and Bon Ami ( "Hasn't Scratched Yet!" tm) on the backside of a wheel that had caked on CV joint grease. It took patience and two doses, but clean up it did.
What did you do to your Volvo today? Topic is solved

Dawn is pretty impressive in a lot of tasks. I've started using way less brake cleaner on caked parts and started with diluted Dawn. A little more scrubbing is all. Tooth brushes, wire brushes.
I almost bought a thing called Brown Royal for wheels, because of the "amazing(!)" videos. But it turns out to be a very strong base formula and I'm not sure that's any different really than an acidic cleaner.

Spent last couple of days finally looking over my friends 98 V70 base. Nice to have it for a longer time so work was not a rush as I wanted to give it a good look over to figure out what it needed to get to a stage '0' and so the owner can get a maintenance recommendation going forward when dealing with the non-specialist repair shop. I have to say that for the most part they have done a good job on the car, especially as they had no stage 0 to work from.
Pretty much all the maintenance is up to date, and now I have the history from 2014 at 44,000km up to today at 160,000km I can now figure out what needs done having gone over it with a fine tooth comb as they say!
For a car going on 24 years old and which stood in a garage from 2004-2014 or thereabouts unused it had to be recommissioned and that was done by a local independent. They seem to have been sympathetic but it still was a big bill in the region I always say of $2500-3000 CDN.
Underside has a thick coat of bitumen which is supple and crack free. Car looks in amazing condition underneath! I have to say I am jealous! Engine is like butter like most NA 10 or 20V motors!
Only fluids left to figure out are brake fluid which may have been done at the last brake service and the coolant.
The only 3 issues I found were, the crank pulley mount has failed, the drivers' door inside release handle spring has broken and the rear section of muffler has had a repair done and a hanger made up for it welded on. This is 50% rotted away and will need replaced soon.
Totally amazing car!
Neil.

Checked mileage again..... 25mpg, so down 1mpg, but it included the weekend which was local driving, not highway.
Also checked the oil.... smells a little gassy, so I want to change it. The engine was running very rich before I changed the O2 sensor.

Got a new passenger axel (actually new), had a motor mount replaced and general inspection. Was advised to replace my temperature coolant sensor by the power steering pump. Indy said 25$ for the part and told me how to swap it.

NEVER use an aftermarket part for the car unless you like issues and ding the job again. In Europe there is access to the OEM supplier part (Vernet?) but we don't have it here. This is a mission critical part!
