2004 volvo S60 FWD poor acceleration, no power when accelerating

Post by nucci480 »

I have a 2004 Volvo S60 FWD non-turbo. I am experiencing a problem where when I step on the gas it has no torque. Takes a long time to rev up and get to speed. Here is a list of a few things I have done
  • I replaced the fuel pump with a genuine bosch fuel pump. It has a steel tank, so I didn't have to worry about the fuel line getting pinched. What was weird is the problem was fixed for like 2 quick trips when the pump was replaced.
  • I thought it might be the tank seal so I just flipped it over in hopes it would fix it.
  • Swapped out the fuel pump module with a used unit.
  • Replaced all 5 coil packs with genuine Bosch coil packs.
  • PCV was done 2 years ago.
  • Replaced throttle body with off-brand unit from eBay 2 years ago.
  • Fuel pressure sensor on the rail was replaced 2 years ago.
  • Timing was done 2 years ago.
  • CEM was rebuilt by xemodex last year, ECM was checked and no issues.
  • Air filter was replaced last month
I'm really about to throw this stupid car in the trash, hopefully, someone can help. I swear I fix 1 problem and 2 more pop-up. unrelated.

Whenever fuel delivery is in question I like to attach a fuel pressure gauge to the injector rail schrader valve and use a long section of fuel injection rated hose running from the rail, out the back of the hood, to the gauge which is taped to the windshield. Then I can monitor fuel pressure while driving. Not too high tech, I know, but very telling about fuel system performance.

Also, how old are the spark plugs and what type are they.

If you want to gamble $10 and 30 minutes of your time - a small investment of both at this stage of the game - try a set of these:

I remember seeing an issue like this a while ago and it ended up being a contaminated fuel tank. Did you shine a flashlight down there when you had the pump out and see if theres dirt or anything. I think changing the pump sometimes introduces contaminants during the process if not careful. I’d change the fuel filter too.

Also agreed on the throttle body I would only put a genuine or Bosch in.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

I don’t believe my S60 has an in-line fuel filter only one in the pump. It’s got the steel fuel tank, the 8th digit of the vin is T. I’m only seeing OEM filters on FCP euro for emissions code (8th digit)
4, 5, c, g, k, l, p, q, s, u
AWD only
plastic fuel tanks

I’m almost wondering if it’s a issue with the traction control system. If pull the battery leads then reconnect them it seems to have the power back. When I test drive it to see if it has torque the wheels will spin a bit. Then it looses all the power on the next launch.
