1996 volvo 960 won't idle

Post by dalwallinu »

Does anyone have an idea why my 1996 volvo 960 with 170,000 kms won't idle this morning, it was fine when I parked it. I disconnected the air mass meter and it would idle but not well.

Welcome to MVS.
Without knowing more about your car it is impossible to even guess.
Any service done on it recently? Any other strange things happening?
Lights on on your dash? Trouble codes?

Thanks, The car was bought new by an elderly best friend of mine and he maintained it very carefully, always had the dealer do the maintenance, the car has never had any problems, I remember when he bought it. I drove the car on saturday and parked it and it will rev up but won't idle unless I unplug the air mass meter. No warning lights, all lights come on and go out when it fires up.

Get your troube codes read...I believe there's a diagnostic box under the hood on your car for this. Others will chime in but until we have a notion of what trouble codes your car has it's going to be hard to figure out what direction to go. It could indeed need a new mass airflow sensor, or it could ba as simple as needing new plugs, wires, and/or cap or it could have some vacuum leaks, or.....

I've seen intake manifold boots fail, out of nowhere, that caused similar symptoms. You might try the old can of carb spray on them and see if it is the problem.

Sadly, as with the 850, on the '96 model 960 it is OBD11. Codes can be read using a generic code reader so you may be able to get this done at Autozone or similar.

As MIJ has said the codes would make diagnosis easier.

Don't wait to long to replace the hose or you'll be in the same predicament again...tape just doesn't last in the heat of the engine bay.
