Yeah, I've done that a few times. My E46 was supposed to be a part out... then I put an engine in it, manual swapped it, and now it's become my fun beat around car. Springs are on the way for it right now!
Now that is one pretty car ! Can't believe that parting it out was ever on the table.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

Yeah, I was expecting it to be way worse when I went to buy it. Turned out to be a really clean car, and after a wash, it looks pretty good!
