Is Powder Coating alloy wheels safe?

Post by scot850 »

I have wondered about this for some time as I did notice that after I have had allot wheels coated, when having the tires re-fitted, the fitting machine clamps leave a deep set of gouges into the rear of the rim which I did not notice on wheels that had their original painted finish.

I was having a vibration problem on my Toyota 4Runner even after having the suspension inspected as well as the steering. It would sometimes become a major vibration/wobble at the steering wheel.

I was baffled until I swapped the wheels over to my 'summer' tires and wheels. First my wife reported on a longer run that the wobble was no longer there. It was not until I went to clean and store my original coated alloys that I discovered that on one rim the lugnut holes were deformed and oval. The Toyota lugnuts are different to the cone shaped location on Volvo rims and lug bolts. The have a cylinder shape that fits into parallel sided holes and a very small chamfer. I could see if you are not careful fitting the lugnuts you could damage the holes in the rims, especially using the air ratchets.

I have done some reviewing of this issue on line and found many references on this subject that the temperatures that alloy wheels are held at while the powder coating can be at or above the temperature that softens the alloy. That would tie in with what I have seen in the before and after coating tire install on the rear of the rims.

Hm, maybe painting is better depending on what temperature they dry those at and for how long! Apparently temperatures as low as 325C can cause issues. One of the large wheel manufacturers in Italy voids any warranty if you powder coat their rims.

Makes you think!

Interesting. I would not have guessed it to be an issue, but maybe? My rims are dirty, and I've been slowly working on cleaning them up, and have discovered more and more defects in the original finish, so re-doing them has crossed my mind.

Deformed lug holes can be diagnostic for lugnuts undertorqued. They don't necessarily have to be 'loose' to allow some movement.

I thought there was a thread on this subject before, and the worry was that the baking of the alloy wheels actually weakened them, making them brittle and more pron to cracking. Lovely thought when your cruising down the interstate.

I’ve seen discussions that powder coating leaves a crust of product on the nut bearing surface thst breaks off , leaving the nut/ bolt undertorqued, which then ovals.

Does that make sense?

Tons of people powder coat their wheels. Aren't basically all of those wheels alloy? How could all of these people be riding on softened, deformed wheels?

After reading 454cid's wheel work posts, I'm considering a refinish on mine as well. But this post gives me pause.

powder coat bake temp 350-400F
aluminum allow anneal temperature 570 - 770F
aluminum allow melting point 1221F

Not even close to the anneal temperature. So what exactly is the issue here?

I think the powder interfering with the lug surface is the explanation here

Aluminum at 350F is just hot Al….
