Blazing saddles holds off the N word for a whole...90 seconds? In the 1970s, this was humour. We have progressed since then. It is still funny to me, probably becuase it evokes the humor response I had at the time.
Its uncomfortably close to the 'Ethicist' in the Sunday TImes two weeks ago.
"my neighbor says his Black Face Santa Claus arent racist, because since no Black person will ever be in his house, they wont ever see it."
There is so much to unpack there, one would need an emotional warehouse to store it all.

For example, Greek and Roman art has been held in the highest regard for ~2500 years, no matter the context.

For what it's worth, I saw ten or twenty minutes of Blazing Saddles 30 years ago and I didn't think it was nearly as funny as others from the era, like The Jerk, or Caddyshack. So I'm not defending it, and I don't have any skin in the Blazing Saddles game.

My COVID infested brain isn’t working too well right now. But I would classify humour as an artform. At the very least it is a craft. A portion of it is riding that fine controversial line but not crossing it. And having the right audience that can distinguish between hate and satire. In a good comedian, the writing is intended for us to laugh at racists. In a bad comedian, for example Larry the Cable guy, and that ventriloquist dude with the racist puppets, their audience is actually racist. And so is their material. Have you heard David Cross open letter to Larry the Cable guy? Prepare to fall off your seat.

Charlie Murphy’s true Hollywood stories on the Chappelle’s show is one of my all time favorites. Especially the Rick James crap but also the basketball game with Prince and the Revolution. Genius!
