2000 PII V40 steering whine

Post by jimmies »

I've tested a car with 59K on it - it is a very clean fully serviced car (last done at 48K) - from cold there is no steering whine at all, but after awhile there is a quiet whine from the steering area. No noise comes from the pump or belt - It seems to come from inside the car around the steering column....it is only a quiet whine but a whine none the less. When I first heard it I thought I had run over my cat !!

Is this normal for S/V40's ???

cheers

Hello Jimmies, welcome to MVS.
When you say "whine," is this when you turn your steering wheel or all the time? On 850's and first generation 70 series Volvo's there is a "collar" at the floor board right past a steering knuckle, where the steering shaft goes through the floor board that used to whine... some could get away with pulling the rubber boot away from the floor, taking the collar out and re-greasing the shaft there while others (like me) replaced the entire "gator" with a newly designed unit. I'm not sure if yours is set up in a similar way but it might be worth checking to see if that's where your whine is coming from.

hi,

thanks for the reply - it only whines when I turn the sterring wheel. It sounds like it comes from the base of the steering wheel area...not low down by my feet......but I could just be hearing it wrong. There is definatley no noise coming from the pump or belt though. It's coming from inside the cabin

cheers

Take a look at the area I described...another set of ears would also be helpful...you turn the wheel and someone else listens...also a stethoscope to pin-point the noise may help.

thanks again for the reply - I will give your test a look. You say this was an issue with the 850's and first gen 70's.........have you heard this with phase2 40's, that's what this car is?

cheers again

I have not heard about this with your particular car but all FWD Volvo's have some common elements. My brother-in-law has an '03 S40 and I'm amazed at how similar much of it is with my S70. Here is a write up on what I speak of: http://volvospeed.com/Repair/70steering.php
