How would you 'fix' this door damage?

Post by AlanS »

My (lazy) son who lives in LA called to tell me that he misjudged a parking opportunity and scraped the drivers door, removing the paint...no dents. A nice 6" x 12" long scrape. He won't take it to a body shop, wants to know if he can just 'wax' it to stop any rust. I am wondering if I can hit it with 400 grit wet paper....then spray some clear over it. He does not want to put any cash into the car...being a 2001 and the tranny is going. BUT...it is on the driver's door and he doesn't want it to degrade any further. Luckily he doesn't live on the East coast or in the humid states.
What would YOU do?

Is there an open metal? Fix it properly anyways, stop the rust.

I find the bodywork doesn't rust, everything else bolted to the body rots and crumbles away.

In the year 9595
I'm kinda wonderin' if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing

Now it's been ten thousand years
Man has cried a billion tears
For what, he never knew, now man's reign is through
But through eternal night, the twinkling of starlight
So very far away, maybe it's only yesterday

In the year 2525, if man is still alive
If woman can survive, they may find

PS Get a touchup paint pen and apply some paint

I'm no expert but if there's no dent I'd try some rubbing compound on a soft cloth by hand and see if everything comes off but a couple of scratches. Then you could see about matching touch-up paint if needed. Or it might look fine after that.
