2000 s70 Would a cam seal oil leak be worth to fix?

Post by warcoy99 »

it leaks oil from the front upper motor. a mechanic told me that would be the problem. i check everywhere else without removing fan belt and waterpump. Does that narrow it down?

If you have not already, you should remove the single bolt in the upper center of the timing belt front cover and inspect for oil on the front of the motor coming from behind one of the camshaft sprockets. If that is the source of the leak, left unrepaired, it can lead to oil getting on the timing belt and causing it not to track correctly--eventually leading to catastrophic failure. So yes, it's worth fixing if that's your problem.

Thanks dosbricks. Would this be the same step as replacing the timing belt? should i get them both done at the same time?

Your 2000 model uses CVVT hubs so it is a bit more complex to replace the cam seals.
But if the mechanic is familiar with Volvo, then it is easy.

To give you an idea what cam seals involve in a 1998 model, see this thread:

To replace the front cam seal, the timing belt must be removed. In that sense, they are similar. However, a full timing belt service includes the tensioner and idler pulley as well, and sometimes the water pump. None of those other three parts are removed in replacing a front cam seal. And a timing bet job at a shop is a pretty expensive endeavor.

Do you know when the timing belt was last serviced?
