Please tell me this is a bad idea

Post by FireFox31 »

To me, a car's color matters more than many things. So a saffron 98 V70R is hard to resist, even with 300k miles and "needs work to pass inspection." Please tell me it's a bad idea to consider this and remind me that I have no spare parking spots.

No spoiler, no blue dials, and no trunk badging make this seem fake or a Frankenstein. It has the R seats though. Almost don't care if it's an R or not because of the color, but knowing what it truly is would be nice.

This reminds me a lot of the weird V70R Saffron I looked at 12 years ago... lots of strange things going on with it.

Neither of my '98 Rs came with spoilers, so the vin might be your guide there. Seems a bit spendy for any hard-ridden horse that old, orange or not. Interior sure is beat up, and I'm with you, a naked rear hatch is odd.
I don't have any space left under the trees out back either, much less disposable income.
This would be the part where Jim would chime in.

I agree - lovely color. I'd be tempted, but with mufflers hanging down and the worn general condition, I wouldn't go over $2K. Max.
You'd have to really want it as a long term project.
300,000+ is about the end of the drivetrain's life from what I understand, so there would be engine / trans work in your future.
And at that point you'd probably want / need to switch to FWD, so there's a bit more $$$.
Probably has rusty brake calipers as well :)

Now that I've talked myself out of it.......

A think a turbo sedan in Saffron with black trim would be awesome.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

My warning here is from experience of my 2000 V70R. The rear muffler system is NLA from Volvo so aftermarket or custom is the only way to go. The systems are mostly junk T409 and in rusty car areas it will be destroyed quickly. There are a few T304 stainless but they are expensive $1000+ easily.

Most of the rear suspension and bushes are NLA, as are fuel lines and many other bits at the back of the car. Most likely also has Nivomat shocks at the rear. If it has been in a rust area then ask abscate how that went on his S70 AWD. He is a good source for creative repairs in particular the fuel lines.

I have spent 10's of thousands on my 'R' and it had half the mileage and had supposedly been well taken care of (it hadn't and been badly repaired). So if you truly want it then go into this with your eyes wide open and be prepared for financial pain!

Good Luck.

There is a silver 1998 "R" for sale in southern Alberta for $2250. A 'bad bearing??' and grinding brakes as well as a salvage title and rusty top of the LHR door make this a scrap car price wise at maybe $1000 CDN.

They may be a performance version, but age has long caught up with them.

I do miss Jim, even though his opinions on things were sometimes vague and unclear

A most valuable insight. Maybe it's cheaper to find a good non-turbo FWD car and paint it saffron. The color is the real draw here.

Do the AWD to FWD swap like bmdubya did and then it gets a lot simpler!
