No timing belt or chain, just gears

Why can't all engines use gears to drive everything instead of a timing belt or timing chain?

Woah! What are those? I like the gear look! I bet the sound from those straight cut gears is something to hear. The 4BT uses helical cut gears.

Older Formula 1 engines had a lot of that kind of design. Now a lot of insane supercar engines.

Everyone of those gears and bearings wears on a 100k interval. Imagine the rebuild cost on that…25000, 50000?
