850 driver side window fix

Post by etzal »

Recently I tried to close the driver side window but as it rose it started tilting at an angle.
I thought maybe the window guide must have come loose or broke again.
Found out that one of the two brackets attached to the bottom of the glass came loose and dropped to the bottom of the door. The glass fits into a channel in the extruded aluminum bracket.
I had to remove the window regulator assembly from the door in order to reattach the bracket to the glass.
Do not know if bracket was originally glued to the glass but I cleaned the bits of rubber still stuck on the glass and slightly crimped the bracket to provide more grip. Not sure how long this fix will last.

Here are instructions which 850_olaf_nz previously posted to remove door panel:

Here is how to remove the window regulator assembly from the driver side door:

1 Remove the covers over the two access holes on the door frame above the regulator (yellow).

2 position the window so you see the green rollers in the access holes.

3 Tape the glass to the door frame so it doesn't move.

4 Detach the regulator arms from the rollers by first removing the clips. Carefully press out the roller which is pressed into a ball joint on the arm. Recommend you have new rollers in case you break them. I found the front roller is fixed to the front bracket and does not slide like the rear roller.

5 Remove the 10mm bolt at door lever pivot (blue). The lever is spring loaded so note how spring (white) is attached before loosening the bolt. Move and tape the horizontal curvy lever out of the way.

6 Once glass is detached from the window regulator arms you can lower them all the way down so it will be easier to remove.

7 Disconnect electrical wires to motor.

8 Remove 8 10mm bolts that hold window regulator assembly (red). Lift up slightly and pull bottom out first.

Thanks for the great write up. Here's one clarification for removing the regulator from the door metal. It's shown on a 2000 V70 front passenger's door.

Lower the window until the bottom of the large toothed arc is above the bottom of the regulator's metal frame and clear of the door. That's the perfect position to pull out the bottom of the regulator, lower it, then remove the top of the large gear. If the window is higher, the two arms will hit the door metal. If lower, the top of the toothed arc will hit the door metal.

And do have one or two green rollers on hand. I broke one when simply removing the pin. Might as well replace them.
