99 v70 XC - steering wheel wobbles on column

Post by Brick Head »

OK - I just added this newest member to the stable yesterday. Noticed the SRS light was on before I bought it but NOW I notice the steering wheel wobbles as though it is not securely tightend down to the steering column. Hmmmmm.......

How do I tear get into the wheel mount stuff without eating the airbag for lunch? I have had steering wheels off plenty of times before but they were all on pre-SRS models.

Why aren't there any service manuals out there for the 99 XC?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to MVS. Let me suggest that you download the 850 service manual in the stickied section...so much is the same on your car as the 850...basically it is very simple:

Extend the steering wheel out all the way and down, then from behind the steering wheel you'll see where there are two screws embedded into a recess...I believe it's a philips head screw driver you'll need. Make sure and mark how your steering wheel comes off so it goes back on straight. To keep the Airbag from deploying, you'll need to disconnect the battery for 20 minutes or so before you do this. I suspect that with the steering wheel loose like it is, you're clock spring inside the steering wheel is broken. It is a mylar piece that winds and unwinds as you turn your wheel- the airbag wire runs through it. On our old 850 it was broken and I replaced it. It was a fairly simple procedure because the part came with instructions. Good luck and let us know how it goes. If the mylar strip on the clock spring isn't broken then you probably have a break or short somewhere else causing the SRS light to illuminate. Once everything is figured out and fixed, the dealer will have to reset the light.

Thank Bill...as usual.
Very little on these cars have Philip's heads...unless you've added them later.
