Re: 06 S60 2.5T AWD ran out of fuel and now won't run

Unfortunately I don't have a P2. Our son has an XC70 but he is working away from home in the mountains. There are a few P2 and P1 in the local PnP's so I will take a chance that one has a PEM the is internal.

The car is an 06 S60 2.5T AWD. I looked in the trunk thinking the PEM would be there but it isn't so will have to have another look. Problem is I don't live near the car and it would be expensive to get to my home shop and get it on the lift to check under it.

I have a portable pancake compressor which I can charge before leaving and it will hold enough pressure even if there is no power.

Thanks for the help guys! Much appreciated.

Pulled a used PM from a V50 for $6.50 at PnP. Now just need to find a way to get it to the car and find where it is fitted on a P2 S60 2.5T AWD!?

We found the PEM! With a little guidance from a friend at the dealership, we found that the PEM is actually fitted on the RHS of the spare wheel well. Swapped it over but the battery is dead so will now have to wait until tomorrow to see if there is any progress!

I was gonna say there's usually 3 places. On top of the tank, behind the RL fender liner, or moved to the spare in the trunk. The unfortunate part for you, is that I believe the spare tire location is actually the solution from Volvo, so your PEM should be in good shape.

I had a CEM relay failure in 2005, the one for feeding power to BCM. According to the datasheet, that relay should have lasted over 100 years, but it happened much sooner. Thanks to Volvo, previously a plug&play $15 relay replacement is a nightmare in L-shaped CEM: they are soldered.

Your investigation needs a wiring diagram and multimeter, I think.

If it gets to that I may be calling on support as electrical work is not my forte. I can do it but prefer not to! LoL!!

I did speak to the young owner yesterday when he came to pick up the PEM. He was getting codes for low fuel pressure.

Thanks for the advice guys. Appreciated.

That 99% is a new fuel pump call.

I'm was thinking the same but the PEM was a cheap easy swap he could do himself. Not looked into swapping a fuel pump on a P2 AWD saddle tank. Hope it does not involve dropping the whole rear end like in my P80 AWD!

It's easy-peasy on P2, it has two access holes under the rear bench. The biggest part is to remove the bench, which is easy, too.

Oh, you need a pump removal tool, too. Watch a couple of youtube videos and you'll get the idea.

Looked at YouTubes and not terrible but it will kill my back! Good job the owner is a young guy. I will direct and he can fix.

He got a quote from the dealer for diagnostic. a fuel pump and filter for $1600 CDN about $1200 US. Ouch! Add to that it will need to be towed there so that is additional cost.

Are there any good reliable fuel pumps anyone would recommend other than the OE one? The OE is somewhere between $450-600 CDN which is steep but less than the one on my 2000 V70R 6 years ago!!

I'm thinking that maybe we should try Vida although I am not experienced using it to diagnose the issue. Otherwise maybe swap the fuel filter first in case it is clogged before diving into the fuel pump.

Thanks,

Neil.
